This is what I get for not checking the front page again before posting. Sorry guys. Mattamyn - hope me? Make it go away?

But at least one should be on the outside
I know that FPPs should have, like, links and all, but it doesn't seem so terribly strange that a bunch of 'em would be all inside, at least not ban-worthy strange.
Future Features?
I love the features you've added (like the new ajax favorites...)
General Request: Matt, can we get a list of your plans of what features you're aiming to implement? Can we (the general mefi population) have input (vote) on the features we want?

I'm testing out ajax favorites on MeFi
I'm testing out ajax favorites on MeFi right now (only www.metafilter.com). If you open any thread you can add the post or any comment as a favorite without leaving the page. Lemme know if you hit any snags and please hold off on "but, but, can you also make it do x?" requests until we're sure it works in most all browsers.
Fake statistics aren't valid answers.
Posting a esolutionsdata.com link in response to an Ask Metafilter question is bad form. Go hone your stand-up routine somewhere else.
Kill this Hussein execution thread please
I don't have a problem with Hussein execution FPPs per se, but certainly this one is deletion-worthy?
Chicago/Quad-Cities meetup
Chicago/Quad-Cities meetup - How about we Chicagoans celebrate winter by doing a ski meetup at one of the near(ish) ski hills? How about Chestnut in Galena? That would make it easy for quad cities folks too.
Also, don't worry if you've never ski'd, you undoubtledly won't be the only one.

Wikipedia as FPP?
Has it become acceptable to copy paste a wikipedia article, shuffle the links around a bit and make an FPP out of it, or did this one just go under the radar?
I like stavros. I like copyright infringement.
I like stavros. I like copyright infringement. I like the kind of hard work that goes into a FPP like this. But there's something about this Wii-winning post that doesn't sit well with me. Could you help me put my finger on it?
Anonymous users ever outed themselves on purpose?
Has an anonymous asker ever outed themselves on purpose? Some questions (like, say this one, or any one of a hundred questions about looking for a new job) seem like after some future event, a non-anonymous followup would not be out of place. Has it ever happened? Even once? Anyone want to do it now?

Dallas Meetup Update
World's smallest, most exclusive MeFi Meetup Evar: ufez, romakimmy's perennially lurking sister, romakimmy and a CareBears Checker Set were in Dallas these past two weeks. Despite a massive amount of obligatory family time, we did manage to do some shoutouts. Auguri y'all.
Hiroshima thread callout
Cleanup on Aisle 57279! What was a really awesome discussion about Hiroshima has now turned to feces-flinging . (This comment being the tipping point, as far as I can see. It's downhill from here.) As someone who was legitimately enjoying the thought provoking comments on the ethics of it all, can we at least move the personal in-fighting over here?
December 26
Favorites Pony
Pony: After favoriting something, the link on the thread still says "add to favorites" (and for comments, it remains a "+"). Suggest changing to "remove from favorites" (and for comments, a "-"). Accidentally favoriting something requires going to the favorites page to undo it, when it could be a lot easier.

a paragraph break callout
I know that it's Christmas, and filmgeek seems like a great guy, and this is indeed a great post. But are the paragraph breaks really necessary? It seems like they don't really add anything to the post, and they don't make the link any more clear or insightful. I don't really see why they have to be there, and they kind of throw off the eye when browsing the blue.
Sorry if this is the Worst Callout Ever. I realize that the topic of line breaks has been touched on before, but as far as I can tell, we haven't gotten into the paragraph breaks too much. What is the policy on this? (To be clear, I don't intend this as a filmgeek callout, just a paragraph break callout).

Logboy injured in Iraq
One of our longtime mefi members - Logboy - was recently redeployed to Iraq. When I noted in one of his comments that he was on leave, I bookmarked his weblog and was shocked and saddened to read that he was injured by an IED. Damn.

Statistics Please
Matt, can I have a pony for Christmas? Nothing too fancy, just some public statistics. Boingboing, for example, uses AWStats, which provides a delicious smörgåsbord of information. It doesn't sound too difficult to use, I've set up similar things on sites of my own.

Why is this thread still around? I know at least one admin has seen it, since my snarky response was removed. Is it now OK to ask for piracy how-to's?
Daegu South Korea meetup
Daegu, South Korea: any Mefites here? If so, do you drink beer? Any time before Jan 16th.

Short notice NYC MeetUp? I'm holidaying in Manhattan from the 26th to the 6th, and I'd love to play the London Mefi Ambassador, and rendezvous with a few native New Yoikers.

Should I mark my own comment as best answer on my own post?
So, I wrote a question and the responses weren't that useful. Afterwards, I posted a reply to my own question with all the information I wished that someone had told me in the first place so that others who stumble on the thread will get something useful out of it. Was it bad form to mark it as one of the best?
wiis for woots
you know...mine wasnt a double. it just happened to be on the same site. no big deal. I just thought it was kinda cool.
OK to post a self-link to a news story?
Is it considered a self-link to post a legitimate news story that you have a personal connection to? If it is, is it OK for me to use MeTa to ask someone else to post it instead of me? I don't want to cirumvent the rules, so I'll hold off on giving the links until there's a reasonable consensus in favor of it.
Posting Copyrighted Youtube Links
Is there a policy on posting Youtube links to stuff that is (most likely) under copyright? I apologize if this has been asked before, but I swear I searched the archive...
Smells Like Astroturfer
Is PreacherTom an astroturfer? He's made 13 posts to the blue, all in the past couple of months. And all 13 of them start with a link to Business Week. There's someone with the same name on Netscape.com's digg-esque site who does the same thing, and one on StumbleUpon, too. And that's not all. Am I being paranoid? Is this even worth frowning on, as long as they're all decent posts?

Well, as it turns out, posting to Metafilter using opera on the wii is a massive pain in the ass. But it works, as this clearly shows.
Meetup in Bristol, Dec. 21, 2006
Bristol-Weston-Super-Mare-Somerset MeFites! Parmanparman is in Bristol! Easton to be exact, looking into running an interfaith radio station. Nothing stamped down on paper yet. Anyone up for meeting for drink on Dec. 21? Perhaps in Clifton or near U-Bristol? Easton has no pubs, so nuts to that idea.

This sort of misogyny is just not on.
Emergency Questions
AskMeFi Idea: Allow users to pay a nominal fee (e.g., $1) to post an 'emergency' question before their two weeks are up. The extra money could go towards maintenance/upgrades or whatnot, and the fact that it's not free would prevent it from being used often.

Old Sidebars
Stupid question time: Is there a way to see old sidebar entries? I apologize if this has been asked before, but I searched Yahoo! and checked the FAQ and the wiki, and found nothing. Specifically, I'm looking for a sidebarred AskMe post about gift suggestions for a strange and quirky family. Thanks!

Atheist-filter?
PinkStainlessTail's fame is spreading.
I'd love to change the (Metafilter) world, but I don't know what to do-ooooooo......
StylesheetPonyFilter: I wander the MeFi universe in the Plain Text theme, thus The Blue is white, The Green is white and The Grey is also white. Wouldn't It Be Nice If hyperlinks in the white version of the Blue were blue (which they are), those in the white version of the Green were green and those in the white version of the Grey were grey?

Will you take a credit card?
I see MeFi still only accepts PayPal. I was going to buy a friend an account tonight, but I stopped using PayPal a long time ago because I think they're pretty hideous and unethical. Will you ever accept credit cards, Matt? Is there not enough demand to make it worthwhile?

three-letter word for a male cat and a five-letter word for a sea-faring vacation
We recently had a MetaTalk thread regarding a three-letter word for a male cat and a five-letter word for a sea-faring vacation. I won't protest the thread's deletion; the entire site exists at the administration's discretion. What concerns me, however, are the Orwellian implications of deletion with no residual record in a community-based site.
Are there limits for jobs.mefi?
Are there posting frequency limitations for jobs.mefi? I have two positions that just opened up, but when I click "Post" on the second one, it brings me back to the preview screen with no error message. I'm guessing it's because I justed posted one - how long do I need to wait before posting the other?
Are these an acceptable use of Ask.me or not?
I'd love to help you name your cat, and I'd love to help you name your baked goods. BUT - Please avoid "help me name my kitten/computer/website" and "help me make a mix CD" questions. Why do we want to avoid these kind of questions? Are these an acceptable use of Ask.me or not?
Four questions about deleted posts
Having suffered the ignominy of my first ever (undoubtedly deserved) deleted post, I have four questions:
1. What's the record for deleted posts from one user?
2. How many users have themselves ever been deleted / indefinitely suspended?
3. Is it possible to delete your own account in protest, and has anyone ever done it?
4. Do mathowie and jessamyn have the power to delete each others' posts?

Preview/post timestamps don't match
I noticed a minor bug when posting a comment earlier. When previewing, all the timestamps are in PST. After posting the comment, everything went back to normal (CST for me). Not a big problem or anything, but a quick search didn't show it having been reported yet.

Browser affected by Metafilter post
Warning: the project posted Dec. 16 entitled "A Charter Documents" attempts to fuck with your computer. At the very least, it tries to install Adobe's Google Toolbar with Schockwave, with a window that (as far as I can see) can only be closed by rebooting.

Can we number favorites pages?
Ponytime: I have a lot of favorited posts. If I want to find something from two years ago, I have to scroll through the whole list. Could the pages be numbered so I could go directly to Page 1? I apologise if this has been asked before, I didn't find any requests through the search engine.

AskMe comment linked to by LifeHacker
Hey MetaFilter is famous again! Adam Savage's AskMe answer shows up on LifeHack. (Via Fark. Oh the irony.)
Have at me
Request: click and limit to specific poster
My first-ever pony request: In a given thread, what about a link next to each member's individual comments, that is titled "see all comments by this member in this thread." So, say, I want to see all of mathowie's comments in a particular thread, I click on that link and it gives me a page with just mathowie's comments in that thread. I know you can see all of a member's comments by going to their user page, but it's kind of cumbersome to click back and forth and you can't view all the comments together. It would be nice to have them all thrown up on one page. It would help us evaluate the position or argument that the person is developing throughout the thread.

Is there a central repository of sorts for MeFi specific acronyms ("FPP," et. al.)?
In the spirit of helpful hive mindedness, I thought I might ask if there's a central repository of sorts for MeFi specific acronyms ("FPP," et. al.). Not basic internet slang acronyms, but ones used frequently on Mefi pages - some kind of list that might help the younger bees buzzing about.
I seem to remember a MeTa post at one point where everyone went off, acronymically speaking, but after a good deal of searching I haven't been able to find it.
Personally I've resorted to this tactic for the most part, but I still get curious from time to time. Yes, I have Google, but what I have in mind is a MeFi specific short list / glossary to spell things out for the more recently initiated.

Possible self-post from user with no real comments
I'm not sure if Tasty Like Your 9V Battery has taken IronLizard's advice to self post literally but 2 of their 3 comments ton MeFi before posting to the front page consist of "La." and 2 of their comments to MetaTalk are "I am just posting to this dead thread. La la la." and "La."
Could the mouseover text for the number of favorites show the usernames of the favoriters?
When you hover / mouse over the [+ 2 favorites] text, you see more text that says "2 users marked this as favorites" Would it be useful if the pop-up text actually showed the usernames of those who favorited it? Small pony i know, only saving a few mouse clicks, but i think it would be cool. Any thoughts?

Librarything.com's resident librarian joins Metafilter
I really don't understand this site anymore.
I really don't understand this site anymore. I have been reading for a year and been a member for about seven months. My last two posts turned into people yelling at me, or telling me I posted in the wrong place.
Just like this one will turn into people calling me names and being negative.
I don't get it. I read the "About Us" and "FAQ", I get yelled at for signing my posts, not posting in the right place. NOBODY offers help, just kicking me in the shins for not understanding the subtle nuances of this site. Which, I might point out, aren't explicitly outlined! Something too "MetaTalk-y"? Great, what does that mean? These the same folks that yelled at me when I made a comment that MeFi looks like 2 day old Reddit.
Y'all have fun with your internet clique. There are good people on this site, but these days it seems like the mean ones are loudest.
Signed,
Me

MD5 hash requested against user passwords
Given the trouble of certain sites, maybe we should also all look at another problem that they have experienced, and make sure we ourselves do not need to send out such alerts. A simple MD5 hash against your user passwords in your database keep them much more secure than holding them plain text.
pulling out info from pages without anchors
FPP question.
In making up an art centered post, I'm finding lots of great images with data that describes the particular piece of art. However, the art and data about it is on a web page with other pictures (sometimes relate, sometimes not)and the specific pieces I want to use do NOT have anchers. The data about the images is important, because the images are part of a storytelling genre/style and the data helps shed light on the images (which are at least 100 years old usually).
So would it be better to link to just the images or link to the web page and just mention that you have to scroll?

AskMe questions popping up on The Vine.
Looks like our answers to anonymous just don't hack it: The second question on "The Vine", seems remarkably similar to this question, on AskMe.
Though, I have to wonder: I understand the desire for a second opinion, or maybe a third, possibly even a fourth, but what makes you think "Yeah, sure, I got 75 answers the last time I asked this, but I think I need to get a 76th opinion."
Note: There's no permalink on The Vine, so I have no idea when the question will scroll off into the archive, replaced by a new second question that renders this post incomprehensible. Sorry.
Note: this is not a callout or complaint, just something I found interesting and MetaFilter related

Beijing Meetup?
God dammit. Everybody's over there in the US and England having their little metafilter meetups, but based on my last post in askmefi, there seem to be a few of us mefites in Beijing, and we're missing out. Well I've had enough, and I say we need to rise up and outmeetup the Anglomeetupspherers. So if you're in Beijing, or you'll be in Beijing soon, talk to me about where/when/how we should do this.

I don't know - I think if you filled in an ethnic group and some other behavioral stereotype, with a link to a simularly bigoted rant that contains no scientific information, this post would be seen as explicitly and obviously offensive.
I'm not sure what the best action is here - it's not so overtly offensive that I necissarily think it should be removed. Reading back on previous Meta discussions it seems that this type of post is generally left standing, and looking at the faq, I see that bigoted language is not necissarily a qualification for deleting, but posts that are just saying "this group of people is inherently bad at x compared to that group of people, don't pretend you don't agree with me, and here's a link to some wingnut saying that too" seem to serve no purpose but causing people to freak out. Thoughts?

NervousAboutMyFirstPostToTheBlueFilter: So, I was surfing a few cartooning blogs, I came across this news story about the creator of Mallard Filmore's recent DUI address.
I was considering posting the news to the blue thusly:
"Edward Bruce Tinsley, creator of the comic strip Mallard Fillmore, is no stranger to controversy, nor apparently is he a stranger to irony. For while he has presented Exhibit A in "Irony Isn't Dead" it turns out that his recent arrest might be Exhibit B."
But before I did so, I wanted to make sure it was FPP-worthy. And who better to weigh in than Meta?
(it's my first time, please be gentle)

Can't find comic strip post
I can't find the post that linked to an online tool to make comic strip, with a variety of artists, even though I posted at least one strip in that thread and looked through all the posts tagged with 'comic'. Either I'm blind, insane, or stupid. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

To know that people will post questions like this, and that other people -- strangers -- will help as they have...I hope Matt still is able to steal a few minutes now and then to take some pride in what he's created.

Boxing Day Blood Bonanza
Anyone interested in donating blood on Boxing Day (December 26th)? If so, you can search for a local blood center at America's Blood or browse their list. If your state or nation isn't listed there, try the AABB's Blood Bank Locator. Maybe we can coordinate in this thread to meet up with similarly desanguinated MeFites, then post photos in a future thread? Bragging rights go to whichever city has the most donors. Who's in?

MetaFilter Folding@Home anniversary.
MetaFilter has had a Folding@Home team for one year now. This seems like a good opportunity to promote it, in case people missed the post last year.
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project at Stanford University that is using computers to find the causes and cures for certain diseases. They have software available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, as well as a specific client that can take advantage of the power of ATI graphics cards (which yield some amazing results). See their FAQ for more information.
If you have a computer that spends a lot of time idling and would like to contribute, the MetaFilter team number is 48034.

this comment was marked as a favorite but does not appear on the saved favorites page, which is apparently still broken.
Wooster Street Art Meetup
What degree and combination of seniority, authority, respect, and recklessness does it take to suggest or organize a meetup? Nil? Is it possible to submit this Wooster Street Art event as the locus of a small NY meetup? It seems that the subject has emerged a couple times recently . . .
My father is cool, but is he linkable?
My father has done some things that I think would be of great interest to a lot of MeFites. I have no connection to the work other than being related to the fellow who did them. Does it belong in projects, or in the blue?

How is this spaying and neutering question not chatfilter?
Just curious:
How come the "Why are so many purported "animal lovers" pro-spaying/neutering?" askmefi wasn't deleted as chatfilter?

How to count comments
I think that deleted comments which have been favorited should continue to appear on the "posts from ___ saved as favorites" page of the user who wrote them. For example, you can look at my profile and see that my stuff has been favorited 108 times, but you can't find all 108 items, because some of them no longer exist.
If they don't, then they should at least not count toward the number of favorited comments listed on that user's page. However, the first solution is better. The fact that someone marked something as a favorite shows that it had value to someone, even though it was deleted, so it ought to be preserved.

Metafilter History
having stumbled through the wiki and come out no wiser, a query: is there anywhere a concise source for metafilter history? i'm particularly interested in how the 5$ fee came to be conceived, and the effects (short-, mid- & long-term) it had on the blue/green/grey.

job.apply(:name => 'joe coder', :skills => 'mad rubyist', :salary => '200_000')
etc...Lenticulations post appears on Metafilter as well as Projects
Okay, so e.g.,this project also appears on the main site. But on the projects page there's still a [post this to mefi] link.
It would be really great if the site could recognize when a post is made with the same URL as a projects project, and associate the two, so that a) the main post is linked to from the projects page, and b) [post this to mefi] does not appear anymore. The main site post could be marked up too ("by our own whoozitswhat").

The only things I have to post are digg, news, and selflinks
I don't come to MeFi much anymore, and I clearly misunderstood what constitutes a self-link. Yes, I linked to my co-worker, but I'm not drunk. I just thought MeFi would appreciate it because of Matt's Star Wars Kid video.
The thing is, if you count out things you can easily find on digg, things that are brreaking news stories, and things that my friends do, I don't have anything else to post.
Which probably explains why I don't post anymore.

Is it okay to lift meterial from a blog?
Um. If someone admits in an FPP that most of the material was lifted from a blog, is it time for an upside-down pitchfork party?
Pancake videos.
My research suggests that old skool Mefites have a thing about pancakes. If that is indeed the case, they should look at this, and this.

Could one of these maybe get side-barred? It's not the easiest thing to search for, and it's been asked twice within a 7 day period...

There were vague rumblings about a festive Chicago meet-up (Yes, we have a lot of meet-ups in the city of big shoulders. We need booze to stay warm). Tuesday the 12th at the Duke of Perth has been proposed and seconded.

Matt, Jess, could we have a formal announcement that posts consisting entirely of Youtube and Google Video links are automatically disqualified from consideration for December's grand prize? Please, please, please? They're beginning to spring up like crabgrass.
"I've seen defendants in criminal matters try to trademark their names..."
A while back, someone (i don't remember who) posted a response to a MeFi post (or an AskMeFi post?) that was treating the theme of Intellectual Property and trademarks. Can anyone help me find it?
The responder wrote something to the effect of: 'I'm a public defender, and I've seen defendants in criminal matters try to trademark their names, and then try to impose a fee on the court whenever the court calls the defendant to bar. Courts don't like this.'
I'd like to contact the responder for more details. I'm currently doing research into IP abuse (copyrighting material that is properly protected by trademark, trademarking non-trademarkable words & phrases, etc.), and this example sounded so unbelievable and so on point.
I must have searched the blue like 20 times for this post. I'm sure I've searched the green a similar amount. How can I find a response from a poster I don't recall, on a forum which escapes my memory? Help me Obi-Wan MetaTalk . . . You're my only hope!

Reading Comprehension 101
Reading Comprehension 101: I'll admit that glueschk was a little over-the-top here but I come here not to damn him but to...empathize with him.
His comment was followed up by yet another person mentioning Marathon Man. Meanwhile, in this thread, I was making a bet with myself to see how many comments until we got Nixon and Elvis. The answer is 15. I'm trying to understand why this happens. Is the poster not being clear enough?

Japanese look and hip-hop imagery. Remember?
I'm trying to remember a post that was on the blue. It was a japanese artist who's pictures combine a traditional japanese look with hip hop imagery. For example, one picture was a group of samurai hanging around a low rider with a dragon painted on the side. Does anyone remember that?
new (unpublished) paper on the "red rain of Kerala"
The new (unpublished) paper on the "red rain of Kerala" was asked to be posted once it comes up. It's up now. So far I only added a comment with the link. Do you think this deserves an FPP? The previous was just a couple of weeks ago, but depending on your level of skepticisim, this could be considered a major development.
Scotland Meetup
What's going on with the Scottish meet-up? Looks like there's lots of new blood, and most prefer Edinburgh, so... let's do something here. December 15th, 16th or 17th seems like the best bet, unless people are free this weekend.

Random Posts
I think "random post" buttons for both AskMe and MeFi would be awesome. You would click on them and they would take you to a completely random post in their respective sections. They would function a lot like the "random article" link on Wikipedia. Not to mention - they'd be perfect for our ADD society.

I don't know how to use favorites
i've got no problem with users who like to hand out favorites like they mean nothing, but, really...
as an aspiring user of metafilter, i'm not quite sure how to grant these special little clicks (especially in light of this). is there a proper ratio one might strive towards of posts i favorite versus posts of mine favorited by others? if not, is there some other measure which might guide me in my favoritism?

I'm looking for one or more past AskMe threads
I'm looking for one or more past AskMe threads in which people shared how weight-gain or weight-loss affected the way they were treated by other people. I know I've read these stories, but I'm just not finding them. It's possible that the they were shared in threads that weren't actually about obesity, but how others perceive us. Can somebody with better search skills help me?
Twin Cities meetup
I propose a Twin Cities meetup for Friday the 8th, at Britt's Pub downtown. I miss hanging with the local MeFites here and I think it's about time we met again. What do you think?

Surely we don't need telling that administering recreational drugs to animals is wrong, especially in a way that basically just encourages people to gawp. If people have a need to ogle animal cruelty there are plenty of sites to cater to their despicable tastes. Mefi, isn't one of them and I'd like to see Meatbomb's post deleted.

Optimizing AskMe
When is the best time of day to ask a question on AskMefi and get maximum response / eyeballs? Seems like there's a hundred questions per day lately. In my particular upcoming case it will be about gadgets, if that affects the answer. Has anyone done an analysis of posting rates over the 24 hour day, and which time periods get the most responses?

Lost Music Recommendations
A few days ago there was an AskMe looking for music recommendations. Someone posted a link in it I wanted to bookmark later, but now I can't find it. Did it get deleted or am I just searching for the wrong tags (tried music and mp3)?
"Best Of" Contest
SUPER HOLIDAY POST MEGA GIVEAWAY!
So we're gonna do another "best of" post thing, this time for December, but this time, no daily winners, just a top three at the end of the month (and I'm sure plenty of honorable mentions). I'll buy a Nintendo Wii for the top spot, a iPod nano for 2nd, and a new iPod teeny clip shuffle for third. You have all month, no sockpuppet ballot box stuffing, and favorites votes will help steer me and jessamyn to the good stuff, but we'll make the final decisions based on our gut reactions to the best of the best. Good luck to all!
