Recent MetaTalk Comments?
The MetaTalk front page currently reports two new comments but only shows me one. Obviously, a thread that has scrolled off the page is still active. How do I find out which one it is?
is this MeTa post open or closed?
Quick! - tell me - without clicking through - is this MeTa post open or closed? Well, which is it? Open or closed? You can't tell, can you? Sucks, doesn't it? You'd think a pop star tag junkie could spare an ASCII spangle to mark molested threads. But Nooooo. Crazy fascist likes to lure you in and jump out at you like a jack-in-the-box Mussolini. Sad. I spoke to his mother. She tells me he used to be such a good boy.
could the blue have a 'spoiler' tag?
Skoosh's reply here reminded me - could the blue have a 'spoiler' tag added to the [B][i][link] tags by the reply box?
By using blue text on a blue background then anything spoilerish for Flash games (etc) would only be visible to those who highlight the text with their mouse.

Keyword Tags For Metafilter
I'm in the process of adding keyword tags to MetaFilter. Right now, you can go back and tag all your old posts. Please, help me make this a useful feature by tagging your stuff with descriptive keywords that help people find other related posts. We could really turn this into something useful if we stick to that. I'm still working it into the new post form and working bugs out of the display end, but the basics are now there. Go forth and help make this useful.
Subsites?
Any or all of the following additional sections would be most welcome: MetaFilm, MetaLit, MetaDesign, MetaMusic. They could be discussions on current trends/reviews in the chosen fields and/or critiques on Mefi members ventures in these areas. I know this is more like a herd of ponies and most likely not forseeable in the immediate future but I thought we could at least talk about it.
Sticky meetups?
MetaFilter gatherings are common, and often planned weeks in advance. In that amount of time, the related threads are pushed off the front page. Is there a system we can work out where they become sticky? Maybe be posted on the sidebar until they happen?
is there any chance of getting a feature similar to the "Best Of"?
Not to be all like Craigslist or anything but is there any chance of getting a feature similar to the "Best Of"? (More inside)
MetaTalk for the logged in only?
This is probably an annoying pony to add, but is there any way we can get a flag added to MetaTalk posts so that they'll only be visible to a user who is logged in?
Search is broken again.
Search is broken, part 532. But this time it's a Google bug. Here's an example: I couldn't find a recent excellent AskMe, until iconomy kindly answered my MetaAsk, noting it was called MySonHatesMeFilter. But using Google, even with that unique string, I don't find the original article, but Yahoo and MSN find it. I'm afraid Google is no longer necessarily "your best bet". How about adding Yahoo and MSN search boxes?
Can we have titles in the AskMe feed?
When I subscribe to the Ask Metafilter rss feed (using Firefox's Live Bookmark feature) only the title tags show, making the list come up as Question #123523, Question #675745, etc. Could the description tag be copied to the title tag in the RSS feed? Maybe the first 25 characters and then a "..." if necessary? Is there another way of seeing questions using this? Thanks.
Can international users be added to the 'users near you' feature?
How about adding some mechanism whereby we Canadian users (and/or further abroad, but I don't know how complex that could get) could join the "Users near this user" crowd? Obviously we would have to provide postal codes, but the mechanism must exist, since it is used on several other site.
As far as integrating it with the US one, well, I don't know if that would be possible, let alone plausible, but it'd be a nifty addition.

Countdown to posting?
Countdown to posting?
I had a good AskMeFi question and went to post it but got the No Posty For You page.
Would it be possible to get a countdown timer involved so that I could get an idea of when I could ask the question?

How do I work this Firefox-thingy again?
Could there be a customization option for Firefox users to have links open in a new tab?
questions get pushed down off the page at AskMe too damn fast
As has been noted before, questions get pushed down off the page at AskMe too damn fast. Most of the questions are good ones. Which means, I guess, we need some better information architecture (categories or something) to happen. When, oh lord†, when?
Automatic detection of the un-best of the web?
Would it be possible to do a little real-time checking for easily catchable sub-par posts, and provide the user with a little advice or more information?
One instance where (given the largely negative feedback in this earlier post) this might be appreciated: If the post consists of a single link to an ebay item, present the user with a message as they preview, something along the lines of "You appear to be posting a single link to an item on ebay. Even if you think that it is quirky or wacky or outrageous, metafilter is probably not the place for it, and you may wish to reconsider your post."
There is some more inside.

Can We Have Thread Ratings?
Could we have a feature by which each FPP is rated numerically, say, 1 to 5, and if it doesn't reach a 3 within an hour, it's dumped? Then we could all stop complaining about lousy FPPs.
RSS for AskMe and MeTa?
RSS for AskMefi and MeTa: Do they exist or am I just missing them? If they don't exist, can we have RSS-flavored ponies? If they do exist, can they be made more plain? How many past discussions of this topic have I missed? What other interesting facts will I learn inside? Fezzy minds want to know.
display how many comments since you last opened the thread?
This might be far too much work, but would it be possible to have a thread display how many comments there have been since you last opened the thread instead of comments since you last reloaded the page?
Something like a favorite would be awesome
I have no idea if this is something other people would want or if it would be easy enough to do...
Any chance of getting trackbacks turned back on?
Any chance of getting trackbacks turned back on, Matt? I really liked the way I could follow them out into the bloggy cloud of commentary, which often included longer essays and pictures of kittens and stuff.
We can haz Projects?
I've heard rumors around here about a potential .mefi section for 'fites to share projects they are working on with the community. Is this something that is in the works? If not, could it be considered?
Can we close signups now?
Can we close the door now? I'm genuinely happy to have some new blood, but here's the problem. Pretty much everyone who's been reading the site with their noses against the glass has been let in. Hereafter, we're going to get a bunch of folks who happen to be wandering by, and know nothing of how things are done around here. (I don't know if that's the case with notmtwain, I'm only using his/her post as an example because it glares so.) We can always open it up again later, but can we have a moratorium on new users? Just for now? Please?
Finding Deleted FPPs
Pony: We've heard it before (a bookmarklet was even developed for it), and the devout scour mefi.lofi for them... but in this age of all the new MeFi citizenry, I think it would be helpful to get an easily accessible repository for deleted FPPs up and running for the benefit new posters to dig through and discover why some posts must die. How easy, how hard, or how pointless?
User Statistics
Speaking of User Numbers, what happened to the population count on the front page? How are we supposed to know where we stand if we don't know how many others are shoehorned into this tiny webspace?
jus' kiddin' 'round, matt 'owie.

Update Spell Check
Would it be possible to have the spell checker updated to accept some common words used here? Mefi and Metafilter (and all other variants thereof) get constantly tagged as misspellings, as do commonly used words like "snarky".
No big deal if it can't be done, but if it could it would be quite appreciated.

AskMe Turnover
By my perhaps innacurate counting yesterday, November 23, 41 questions were posted to AskMe. Currently, the AskMe home displays the most recent 40, which means that yesterday's questions appeared on AskMe for less than 24 hours. For daily readers I guess this isn't a huge deal assuming you read AskMe around the same time each day, but for others perhaps a smaller font and a bigger query is in order?
Mathowie has teased in a comment that he would launch another section of the site
Also, another teaser: I'm gonna launch another new *Filter section this weekend. For reals, yo.

MetaFark FireFox plugin?
Fark FireFox plugin - So uhhh... at the risk of calling down all the wrath of hellfire, is there a use for something similar for metafilter?
How can I style my userpage?
I want my user page to be a color, like orange clock's. How do I do that? I understand basic html and all that; I really would like to know the specific html to make your user page a color (other than blue; nothing against it, of course, I'm just more of a pink girl).
Near-this-user outside the US, please?
Matt how hard would it be to add the near this user to people outside the USA? Assuming the code just uses a proximity match on zip code a similiar thing could be done with postal codes in Canada and I guess the UK.
All our non-US members, does your coutry have a similiar code?

Removing Ads
Is it possible/good karma to turn off the adbar on the side, now that I'm one of the (mass of) elite Metafilter users? I don't want to do it in general -- paying for the existence of MeFi is something I'm quite happy to do by showing ads -- but from school I get a fair amount less bandwidth (University wireless is a mess) and every little bit I can trim out is a good thing by me.
Resetting Passwords
Metafilter is one of the only membership sites on the web that doesn't allow a user to reset their password. Now that you have some help with the coding, and to facilitate sponsored memberships and take some of the workload off of you (not to mention provide all the normal benefits that prompt sites to allow password changing), wouldn't it make sense to add a password change widget to the site? This can't be very complicated coding. Or is there some specific reason why you don't want this feature?
Simultaneous callout and feature request
Sidebar for Newbies?
Would it be possible to add a little sidebar in MetaTalk listing links to the Wiki for some of the more common questions, such as "What does '.' mean?" and "Why was my post deleted?"
Can we get another background for AskMe?
COLOR THEORY CRYBABYFILTER: I love the blue and grey of metafilter, but find the green of AskMefi to overwhelm me, and in kind of a swampy pea green soup way where I can feel ill if I read it too long. Is it possible to offer another background color, similar to the white screen you can get in your preferences when the Metafilter blue gets similarly distracting? I love AskMefi but that green really gets overwhelming at points.
US politics moratorium request
Matt, can we have an official "Day Without US Politics"--perhaps this Friday? I am so sick of the tired wrangling about how much of the site is USElectionFilter, and how wonderful all the random "cool web stuff" used to be. It would be really, really nice to have a one-day moratorium on the political stuff, and on the "too much political stuff?" debates.
It's not about the links
In AskMe, the button shouldn't say Preview the Link, it should say Preview the Question.
will there ever be an anonymous way to ask questions?
Stet's question reminds me: will there ever be an anonymous way to ask questions? I'm sure there are lots of people out there with things to ask that they don't want brought up when they're running for office...
What about a Best of the Best of MetaFilter?
What about a Best of the Best of the Blue?
It would be kind of interesting to see which of the top posts (not sure how that would be defined) is voted as the best of the best.

Can I see use data?
Curiosity about posts and comments leads me to ask about the feasibility and ease of generating some use data. Like being able to see who's posts have gotten the most comments, which posts have gotten the most comments period, speed of commenting, things like that, which days get more comments, etc.
Is this doable, has it been done already? Can I see?

AskMe Categories
would anyone else like to see categories like here in metatalk on askme? (mi)
Can we have a Meta* search page?
Is it technically feasible to have a single search page that can search, if so desired, all meta* content at once? Or must I be doomed to a weary life? Searching three things is hard and I need a nap afterwards. Help!
MeTa "More Inside"
Can we start using [more inside] in metatalk? It's a pain to come upon posts like This one after they've had their desired effect and the comment has been deleted. Because you have to basically guess what is being complained about. [MI]
Pony request: accesskeys.
Accesskeys? Maybe "r" for preview and "p" for post?
AskMe Anonymizer
I'd greatly enjoy an anonymous feature on Ask Metafilter. Just last week I was going to ask for tips on buying an engagement ring, but worried the Google Indexing of the question might result in the surprise being ruined for my (now) fiancée. I'd be ok with it not *really* being anonymous (ie, for tracking down abusers, the data would still be stored, just not displayed).
"oops! god no, i take it back!" button
Speaking of the Value of D'oh: crush-onastick suggested a "oops! god no, i take it back!" button and ook added "But it should disappear once somebody else has posted after you, so people can't delete something from the middle of a thread.". I thought it was a good idea, but I should: I suggested the same thing in February 2000, only I wanted to call it a "D'oh" button. Less a pony, more an old grey mare?
Mixed bag
Multiple Metatalk things. Your amaglyda and why politics on MetaFilter achieves nothing, outsourcing Ponies and a free meal at Wagammama. (more inside >>)
Could we have a post comment button on the comment page?
Could we have a post comment button on the comment page? Going through preview is unnecessary in a lot of cases, and in the cases where it is necessary people aren't going to let the extra step actually force them into previewing. Also, since it looks like preview for html character entities is going to remain broken for the time being, being able to hit preview and then going back and hitting post comment if all is well would be preferrable to having to preview and then fix up the entities again (or copying and pasting).
