Notification of new threads and comments.
Would it be possible to add a "There have been X new threads and Y new comments on MetaTalk since your last visit" to the MetaFilter page?
XML on MetaFilter?
an xml threaded metafilter with structure based on the dewey decimal system. whenever you make a post or comment it fits it into the big picture. your xsl transformation(s) output based on criteria chosen like dates of submissions/comments, terminology, subject, or other criteria the client can select using a gui/web form, or their own custom xsl stylesheet.
Expand the timestamp to include the year, please.
I know this had been requested here before, but if it is not too much trouble, can we have a year stamp added to the time stamp for each post?
Case in point, MiguelCardoso's this post was posted on the same date, but two years after the original thread started.

Would it be possible to implement a "watch thread" feature?
Matt: Would it be possible to implement a "watch thread" feature? With so many posts now there are some I really don't care to follow while others I'd like to check back on often and have them at the top when I log in or switch views. The sort by most or recent comments doesn't quite do the job in this instance.
How Can I Filter Out 9/11 Posts?
My brain is mush - is there a way we could metafilter metafilter to filter out all the war/terrorism/WTC Attack posts for those of us on information overload. I'm longing for just plain old interesting links and news again
Let there be karma
A Karma (voting) system for thread quality coupled to a front page ranking/filtering method. Karma to be weighted by the degree of enlightenment of the voting MeFi (using join date as proxy). Selected MeFi luminaries accorded Budda status, capable of bestowing Big Karma. [more]
Often I want to go straight to my last comment in a thread
It would be really helpful if the comments (as seen from the comments by user page) within a thread were in order.
Often I want to go straight to my last comment in a thread, but sometimes finding them in threads where I've commented a bunch is difficult without careful inspection...

HELP page
I don't see a MetaFilter HELP page anywhere...and I think some is needed.
For example, tinkering with Preview shows me that some HTML is accepted, but as it looks odd there apparently are restrictions that I can't find. I do see that a simple blank line is fine, and a Paragraph tag breaks the MF formatting.

Post Sept 11: Smaller text for more posts
Matt -- thanks for your work over the past few days -- will you indulge a suggestion? If the front page is being rendered manually, could the text be smaller, as in the same size as this text here (10pt is it?). With so many threads appearing every few moments it may make the front page more readable and the difference between discussion, news, solace and troll threads more apparent.
Page Two?
We've been going through a several-month bitch session out here about what Deserves the special honor of Metafilter's "front page".
Problem: there is no Second page - the front page is also the back page.
So, why Not a secondary page? Allow stories to be voted to the front page by either the number of reader contributed posts, or by straight vote, which would give sufferage to the lurkers.
That way the purists get their crown position, and we don't have to listen to yet another border war in every other post about what belongs, what doesn't belong, what should be in Metatalk, what is a double-post from eight months ago, or hear yet another bemoaning of the lessening quality of Metafilter posts.
I personally wouldnt mind Meta-Aphartheid, if it would knock off all this stupid bickering.

Can my comments include my posts?
I have no idea how difficult this might be, but it would be nice if "My comments" also included threads I started even if I didn't add any comments to them.
What are people searching for on MetaFilter?
Since we get to see the search queries that bring people to MeFi, would it also be possible to track and post which search queries are the most popular within MeFi? The results may not be that interesting, but some of us would probably get a kick out of it.

RSS Headline Feed
If you don't already produce one, can we have an RSS headline syndication feed?
Simplified MeFi pony request
I would love a pared down version of MeFi that I could sync with via Avant Go. Ideally, it wouldn't have the sidebar or header links, and would limit the display to the last couple of days (since you can't have AvantGo use your cookies.) Yeah, I know, MeFi is all about discussion, why would you want to read it in offline mode? My local paper sucks, and I can't think of a better way to get through progress bars or waiting in the doctor's office.
How about a MeFi email digest?
If someone had the time to put together a daily or weekly e-mail digest, I know I'd subscribe. It wouldn't have to be Matt, obviously, and I'd like to personally nominate Joe Clark.
Linking to Affiliate Codes
Hey Matt - I don't know how easy this would be, but how about a script that looks at links as they're posted and if it recognizes a link to an Amazon product (or any of 100s of others), it would automatically reformat the link with the Give MeFi 15% back if somebody buys this product off this link character string.
Then you could just sit back and rake in all of the subversively gotten gain.

Use the MeFi sidebar to draw attention to recent MeTa threads?
I posted this in another thread, but since you can't see new posts on MetaTalk, I decided to post it here. Would it be a good idea to list recent MetaTalk threads in a section of the right sidebar?
Also: would dates be better than days for right sidebar posts (7/27/01 instead of Friday)? Kind of like filepile. It's hard to tell how stale the news is with just days...

Pagination Pony for Personal Pages
could the "http://www.metafilter.com/search_posts.cfm?user_ID=xxxx" page be split up into multiple pages? Kind of a "page 1 of 12" deal. When trying to read through the comments of our more senior members, the download time is reminiscent of post 1142.
Been-there-done-that Button Pony Request
Been there/Done that:
A button so that if a significant number of readers mark a post as a duplicate or just really boring, etc. then your preferences filter it out. So if someone were to post AYBABTU again, annoyed readers would mark it, and those who came later wouldn't see it unless they turned off their filter.

Search Comments by User?
Comment Search. A friend of mine just started reading metafilter and she wanted to read where I've made comments in the past. (Not sure why, but..) Is it possible to search for comments made by other people and I just don't realize? Is it unwise due to bandwidth considerations? Just curious.
Pony - filter out semi-committed-participants
Obnoxious feature request: A user preference that allows me to avoid seeing all contributions by people who don't provide an email address or home page address in their profile.

Can we have more IM options?
More IM options. Not to seem to sad but I don't have an AOL screen name. Nor do I have an ICQ number. I do have a Yahoo! Messenger thingy. An MSN Messenger wotsit and (more importantly) a Jabber address (nrichards@jabber.com). What about adding some more fields for the most popular ones and a 'write in' for the Open source client of your choice.
New link indicator on front page; pony!
I'd find it very useful if there were marks next to links on the front page so that I could see straight away which links are new since my last view. If I check the front page and there are 20-odd new links, I can't remember which I've seen before. Something like this would be nice.
common un/pwd for nyt?
Another NY Times suggestion...
Opensewer has a publicly available login and password to view articles they think are of interest. Is this feasible for us? I know there haven't been a lot of NYTimes posts lately, and someone mentioned in a previous MetaTalk thread that NYT might crack down on group logins. But since channel.nytimes seems to be closed for the time being, is this a possibility? Something like login: Metafilter, pwd: A-list...

"Older"/"Newer" links at the top of the page
I would just LOVE it if the "Older"/"Newer" links were up at the top of the page as well (in a fixed location). That way I could easily to the next thread without having to scroll down or go Back...
When you reload the page, can the "new" comments be updated?
i have this tendancy to sit on mefi's home page and just reload every now and then for new comments. (am i alone?) anyway, i notice that when you leave the site and revisit, you get a different tally of what comments are "new", but when you stay and reload, what was new last time is still considered a "new" comment (with newer ones added onto what was there previously).
my idea is to change the code such that when you reload the page, the "new" comments for a user are updated as when you leave and revisit the site. i don't know the algorithm you're using matt, so i don't know if this even feasible or not, or if anyone else would want the behavior to change.

"recent comments" browsing misses interesting stuff
For the past week or so, I've been browsing by "recent comments," which seems to work the best for me. However today I switched to "date" to check out what I've been missing and was surprised to see that there was quite a bit of very interesting links that I had missed.
It seems that the really chatty topics are the ones I've been seeing, but the really interesting links were in the date filter.
Anyway to make the side-bar customizable to add the feed of date or recent comments? Not that it's all that difficult to switch between the two, but it would be nifty to be able to look at both at the same time.

MeFi Primer: How Best To Post
Uh-oh Zach's got another stupid idea... A thought that has apparently been percolating in my head just surfaced: MeFi Primer: How Best To Post.

poppie has posted 1 link and 3 comments to MetaTalk
Now that we have search here (thanks!), I'd like to see user data for MeTa in addition to the MeFi info. For example: "poppie has posted 1 link and 3 comments to MetaTalk."
Pony: categories for posts
Recently there's been an awful lot of posts each day on Metafilter. This is great, except that topics I'm involved with are flying down the page very quickly, and I'm losing track of what discussions I'm in. So, I had an idea.
Now, after reading the earlier thread about 'limiting the site to 10,000 users', perhaps my idea is good. Perhaps it's bad. It's probably not implementable, but here it is anyway.
Why not allow people to choose a category for their postings? Just like Memepool does. For example.. 'Crazy'.. 'Fad'.. 'Politics'.. etc. While the front page would continue to show all posts, it would nice to filter them myself, and not have front page posts moderated by someone else (which seems likely in the future). No?

Annual MeFi Awards
I think there should be an annual Mefi Awards, with categories and all that. Best thread. Best member name. Best proposed feature. Worst Proposed Feature. Worst thread, and so on. And I think the first order of business should be to vote on the categories.
MeFi Events?
While I'm aware that MeFi is not supposed to be our own personal mailing list/craigslist/singles bar/whatever, sometimes there's events that warrant attention by the MeFi community -- get togethers, SXSW coordination, etc. It might be nifty to have a MeFi Events section added to MetaTalk where if you were in some geographical area and wanted to host a gathering, or invite MeFiers to yours, you could post something [even a self-link!] there. What do you all think?
Show more threads?
Would it be feasible to increase the number of threads that appear with the "recent comments" feature? rodii made the point the other day that as the volume of posts has increased, threads fall below #20 pretty quickly and tend to die sooner than they may have in the past. If recent comments were completely chronological with no limitation by original thread date, it might result in fewer double posts.
Adding usernumbers to profile page suggestion
Minor suggestion: how about adding the member number to the profile page, or informing members about how to find it?
I know it seems minor, but I never knew where to find that info. And with the member numbers starting to come up in the discussions, I started to wonder: "Where do I fall into this ranking? Am I more of a newbie or an old-school vet?"
It took me several minutes of poking around MetaTalk (lurking for the answer before I post the question, y'know) before I figured out how it's done.
(Note to new folks: mouseover the link to your profile page, and it will appear in the link shown in the status bar.)
And, by the way, I'm #481 -- which I think qualifies me to say I was into MetaFilter back when it was cool. :)

Can you make sure they at least saw the guidelines?
If it would be too much to trouble to implement, no big deal, mathowie, but how about requiring a scroll down the posting guidelines page before someone posts their first link to MeFi? Some of the discussions on MetaTalk lately indicate that first-time posters aren't really aware of the guidelines, and maybe this might head off many of the threads that you delete outrightpage before someone posts their first link to MeFi?

Tweaking the Customization Page
Nice job with the new info fields on the customization page, but I would recommend coverting spaces in AIM names to plus signs (+). In cases where a user has a space in their screenname, putting that space in the field will cause the screenname to be cut off at the space when passed to AIM.
Can we correct the search result grammar?
I noticed that when you search for a topic on metafilter, if only 1 hit results, it says "There were 1 results for...". Would it be possible to put a check for singular results in the script and make the response grammatically correct?
"Post with Comment"?
A "Post with Comment" feature, which enables you to post a link *and* the first comment in a thread at the same time.
Pony: activity tracking for MeTa, MeFi
it would be neat if we could bookmark metafilter and metatalk threads to see when they change. for example, if you enter a comment, you can bookmark the thread for when further comments have been made in response. at the moment, i'm using spyonit.com, but it'd definitely be neat if there was an incorporated feature at metafilter for everyone to use. email notification would be another option.
Open more links in new window
I know this has been mentioned previously (but there's no search function in MetaTalk, and I'm too lazy to look the thread(s) up by hand)... Anyway, I've set my preference for links to "Open in a new window". Problem is, the new window command is only applied to the subject link on the front page... not links found elsewhere in the post, or in comments to the posts. I'd really like all links to open in a new window regardless. Is this by design? I'm I whining?
MeFi Projects
MeFi Projects: It could just be another message board under Metatalk - but I think there's a lot of creative people who meet at Mefi and it would be inappropriate to post projects to the main page. So maybe a subpage for that?
Meta information feature
I'd like to request a feature in which meta-information about links (e.g. source, medium, etc.) can be placed in a text field during a post. I've tried various schemes for highlighting this metainformation (different colors, italics, etc.) but 1) I frequently get flamed for it, and 2) It's taken down as it is deemed inappropriate. In my estimate, displaying metainformation in a different color is useful, because it allows the reader to filter out links he or she might not be able to/want to access. (e.g., lately, RealPlayer).
In addition, I've really been flamed about dated links. I know that metafilter is about things new and cool, but new is a relative term in different contexts. Can anyone suggest a paradigm in which I don't anger mefi'ers with such posts? Or is this more of a feature-driven concept? Or should I just tell these guys to piss off? ;)
Thanks!

Search by username
While I'm at it, I'd love to see a users page that would include the list from the members link on the 'powered by' bar, the 'search by user name' think Matt put together recently, and also a seach by username. What other ideas can y'all add.
Powered By Bookmarks
How about a bookmark for the lovely 'powered by' bar? It'd make it even easier to point people to how cool it is.
