Request that Metatalk show number of new posts and comments: feature already exists
Why is there no "X# of new posts/X# of new comments" on MeTa? would it be that hard to implement?
custom stylesheets
Not that don't like the look of MetaFilter, but I think it would be nice if the Customize page had a textarea field for specifying custom stylesheet rules. More inside...
MetaTalk archives?
It's a pity there is no MetaTalk archives. Occasionally I take a few days off to actually get work done and I feel like I'm missing something important.
MeTa XML stream requested
Alright, I've found the MeFi XML stream, now how about the MeTa XML stream? Search the MeTa comments and couldn't find anything... thanks in advance.
getting first comment in your own post
how about a textarea on the post-a-thread page to allow you to optionally post the first comment on the thread? reading rich's comment on how not everyone wants to write up such a comment with word or notepad beforehand, it seems like this feature could be useful. no one jokes about where's the "more inside" text, and the ease of use in posting that first, explanatory comment may help in keeping FPPs from getting too large.
Reverse chronological display
I would, again request the ability to have threads display in reverse chronological order, for ease of following new contributions. Together with an option to only display the the most recent contributions (say, last 10 or 20 within a post) there would be considerable server conservation.
XML strips out HTML including links
Hi. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature request... Why does the XML feed at http://xml.metafilter.com/ strip out any HTML (namely links) out of the nodeValue of the body elements? Why does the feed at http://www.metafilter.com/metafilter.xml provide a synopsis and a link to more while the previously mentioned feed shows the complete text (it also strips out HTML too)? Boy, it'd be nice to implement some XML-RPC functions for common tasks (posting, logging in, etc.) and spice up the XML feed so that a developer could build a different client for MeFi...
Can we get a thread tracker?
Often, it is complained that threads scroll off of the page too quickly, etc. Perhaps some sort of thread-tracking like that suggested here could help.
A post delete feature
A post delete feature. My school's internal bbs does this by only allowing you to delete your post if it was the last post to that thread or FP, so no replier ends up looking crazy. Might clear up a lot of duplicate/angry posts.
Ring of Death feature
I want me a Ring of Death feature (more inside).
Request: clarification that MeFi logins work on Meta.
Would it be possible to explain on the MetaTalk login page that MetaFilter and MetaTalk logins are the same thing? I joined MetaFilter sometime around August and had wanted to participate, but thought I would need a new account, which, obviously, was (and is) not available. It wasn't until this post, followed by this response, that I realized that the logins were the same. Clearly, I wasn't the only one who had this problem. I would think a small note on the page would do the trick.
Dates on old posts
There doesn't seem to be any way to tell exactly when an old thread was posted. The original FPP has a 'time posted' tag, and the comments all have 'day' tags, but there's no year listed anywhere. (more inside)
MetaTalk is not the place for second-string MetaFilter posts
Ranking most linked sites? Search posts by site?
Is there a way to see a ranking of the sites most often linked to by mefi members in their posts? (would be interesting to see where mefi takes us every day, sites might find it interesting to, if that mattered) Also, is there a way to search for all mefi posts linked to a particular site? (was going to post something from ApeCulture but then thought maybe everyone goes there already, so why bother) Thanks.
Limit front page posts to once per day instead of 24 hours?
minor feature request: limit front page posts to once per day instead of 24 hours?
Mefi Email
Email this MiFier: it would be nice to have the ability to contact even those MeFiers who don't have an email address on their profile page [more -->]
"New comments" link together on one page
How about an option for the front page that would allow you to click the number of new comments and be taken to a page which contains those comments, threaded according to the corresponding post?
Can we rate comments like slashdot?
What do people think about a ./ -like feature allowing you to rate comments made by others, and then a filter feature allowing you to ignore comments below a certain threshold?
Posting Resumes
Ability to network/post resumes.
Does anyone think this might be useful? postget, PuD's new site, is trying this approach.

Request: link to deleted double threads in the main one.
I'd like to request that when a post is removed because it is a double-post, can it simply be removed from the index page and a link to it inserted into the comments for the post that is retained? Is this possible?
Pull-down box for comments selections?
How about a recent comments/my comments/most comments pull down box for MeTa?
Thread of the Week
Idea: every week, each user gets to vote for one thread as Thread of the Week. Monday, the winning thread is linked in the sidebar. Occurred to me as I was reading the smoking thread, which I almost missed completely.
Can we have years, please?
Threads are identified with a day and month, but not a year. Now that there are a couple years' worth of archive, it happens that people link to an older thread from a previous year, and when one goes to that page, all we see is something like "March 30." In many cases, placing the thread in its proper timeframe is extremely relevant. Is there any way to mark these with the year so that we know if we are dealing with March 30, 2001, March 30, 2000, March 30, 1999? This will only become more of a problem as the years go by.
MeTa: Sort By My Comments?
Would it be easy to put a Sort By My Comments (and maybe by recent comments too) into MeTa?
Comment Limits Per Thread?
Now that each subscriber is limited to starting one thread a day, isn't it time to limit the number of comments per thread that a subscriber can post? With unlimited commentary, it's just unfocused chat.
Category field
We already know that each thread has an (unused) category field.
Any chance that the following process can happen:
1. Categories are decided.
2. A team then allocates each thread to a category. (Happy to do it myself)
3. sports.metafilter, politics.metafilter etc. resolve to categories.
???

Killfile request
I don't know if this has been mentioned or suggested before; but, regarding all the talk of 'stupid posts' and 'useless comments' --- what if matt built in an "ignore this user" feature? Then all posts from that user would never appear on your screen, all the comments would be blanked out with " *** this comment ignored ***"; or you could have your choice -- ignore posts but not comments. And then you could have a user admin screen that lets you see everyone you're ignoring. that way, you could periodically check and see if they've gotten better and you don't care to ignore them anymore.
again, i don't know if this has already been discussed. i searched for it but couldn't find anything. just a thought.

MeTa links on user.mefi/[number] but not username.mefi/[name]
Minor detail: going to user.mefi/[number] you get links to a user's MeTa threads and comments - very useful - but going to username.mefi/[name] you don't.
Random link?
How about a link which will pull up a random thread from the archive?
A pony of any color?
I think Metafilter is the best thing there is. When I saw the bright ,colorful, sparkling "Spooky Filter" on the home page, I realized what I have been longing for more than anything in the world: being able to choose a brighter color pattern for my personalized viewing pleasure. Am I a heretic ? Will I mercilessly burn at the stake?
Sidebar collapse
Sidebar collapse. I think when folks were asking for the sidebar collapse to be brought back, it was not so much to get rid of clutter as it was to free up that 25% of the screen that the front page posts could run into. Even with the sidebar collapsed [and the ads remaining, they're ok with me] I still have a large blue stripe down the right hand side, making it one longass page. Is there a way to wiggle around the front page elements to have the ad present but more side-to-side room for posts, or is this just me and my mac pissing into the wind?
Can text ads open in a new window?
Can the TextAds kick out a new window, so I don't have to leave the warm confines of MeFi and be sent hurtling through the vast expanses of cyberspace into areas unknown, unseen and untrusted? That would be muy bueno.

Old posts Italic? Great!
When were the old posts on the front page italizied. Knowing me, it happened a week ago and I just noticed. Great idea though.
Search by Date
As an alternative to machaus's idea (below) couldn't the search engine be searchable within a date range? For example use the MeFi search just over the past month and let google search the rest.
More Granular Searching
A lot of times when I do a search here, I'm generally looking for a specific thread, not a specific comment. I'd like to be able so specify if I want to search only threads, only comments, or both. I imagine that this would help reduce the server load as well as making is a little easier to narrow down your results.
Would it be possible to make every post compulsively go through Spell Check first?
Would it be possible to make every post compulsively go through Spell Check first? It's very distracting but, worse of all, it diminishes the poster, who is unfairly judged on pedantic, orthographic criteria.
Categories
So is it time for categories on MetaFilter, specifically to filter mainstream news feeds from press releases from more personal, indie items?
How Can We Stop Doubleposts?
Wow. Three double-posts in a row. Nothing new in and of itself, but this makes me wonder if MetaFilter could implement a FilePile type icon based system for marking double posts. (Inside: I will try and explain myself)
RSS feeds for Metafilter and Metatalk (Oct. 2001)
If there were MetaFilter and MetaTalk RSS feeds that contained all of the information the front pages normally do, and we had permission to mirror them, it could take some server load off the site.
MeFi and MeTa should be standards-compliant.
How about a standards-compliant version of MetaFilter or MetaTalk?
Disclaimers: (1) ignominious self-link; (ii) tested in Internet Explorer 5.1 and Netscape 6, should work in all CSS-compliant browsers; (c) guaranteed to look hideous in Netscape 4 et al; (IV) XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS validated by W3C.

Post a Comment Should Have an Anchor Tag
Add an anchor tag to the MetaFilter "Comments on" page and the MetaTalk "MetaTalk detail" page so clicking on the "Post a Comment" link goes directly to the comment form. This would save scrolling through a long page to post something.
Stop Allowing HTML
Strip all HTML from posts, only allow a few basic tags by using [ and ] like those funny message boards do. This could allow hyperlinking and basic formatting without the problems that, e.g., the style attribute brings up. (There’s no way to prevent people from impersonating other users, messing up the page, etc., except by disallowing the use of HTML.) What do you think?
^H^H^H^H
The ability to edit a post even after it's been well posted when glaring proof reading edits have been spotted by the well poster...
Request: Member of the month poll.
A Member of the Month. With software for voting.
display gender?
Most people's usernames aren't indicative of their gender. This leads to people automatically assuming all posters are male until proven otherwise, and this seems to be ticking off a number of female posters. Possibly a preference of 'display user's gender next to their username' would be useful? Turned on, it would display the male or female symbol next to the username (or (m)/(f) in text-only mode), if the user's gender is set in the profile. (Say, depending on what letter it starts with.) People not logged in wouldn't see any of this.
MeFi Lite?
I'm currently visiting metafilter with my images turned off in the hope that it will reduce server load just a little. does it?
along the same line of thought, matt, an version of metafilter until server problems are resolved? ala emergency CNN? would it make a difference?

Shorter user comments page
Could the user comments page (./search_comments.cfm?user_ID=XXXX) be set to return only the most recent 20 or so threads posted to, with an option to show the full list at bottom? Increasingly, I'll check the front page just to see if any new threads have been posted, then pop over to my own user comments list to follow up on recent threads I've been interested in and commented on (easier than re-find them on the crowded front page). I'm thinking this might help reduce server bandwidth and db querying, and return the page more quickly.
Unless I'm the only one that goes to my user comments page with any regularity, in which case it's not likely to make much difference. :)
Single link for a whole post?
We should be able to refer to a topic (i.e. whole of thread) using single link - in a way that will allow us to send it via email to other people who are likely to be interested, but don't use metafilter regularly.
