Sitewide option for relative dating? (THIS IS NOT INCEST-RELATED, LIVEJOURNAL PEOPLE)
I find the "7 minutes ago" style of dating found on the "My Activity" to be far easier to parse than the normal way it is listed in threads. Any chance of a profile switch to enable that site-wide with the detail time available on a hover or something?
Behind the curtain, please
cortex notes in passing something about the "admin console." Jessamyn drops a dark reference to the "admin-facing flags" interface. Come on MeFi elite admin caste! Let's see screenshots! Feel free to lie if the truth is not interesting.
Strap on your running shoes!
MetaFilter Runs v.3.1 is nearly finished, and it looks like ajr is going to take out the speed title. Congratulations, ajr! There seems to be a consensus that the distance challenges are more motivating though (especially for those of us who are decidedly more tortoise than hare), so pj_rivera has proposed an ongoing series of monthly distance contests. The June one is just starting, so please list your Nike+ username if you haven't been issued an invitation yet.
What's wrong with this AskMe?

I'm not big on doing the call-outs, but when the question poster Mach3avelli asks a question and provides a big ol' great bunch of examples, well, just wanted to thank them for the thread.
I'm not big on doing the call-outs, but when the question poster Mach3avelli asks a question and provides a big ol' great bunch of examples right in the question, well, just wanted to thank them for the thread, and hope it makes the sidebar (which is NOT why I'm doing this, by the way).
Thanks also to some of the stellar suggestions the hive has posted, and non sum qualis eram's description of Rossini. It's so easy to snark on people online, but it's good to thank someone when they do something nice as well. Y'all have almost always been so helpful, and I learn something new here everyday. Music is incredibly important to me - as I suspect so many of us! - so having a new playlist of music to investigate is a treat, and yet another example of why this was one of the best $5 purchases I've ever made in my life. Thanks all.

Anyone going to Bonnaroo?
Heading to the Bonnaroo Music Festival in a couple of weeks for the first time - any other MeFites planning on attending? (Anti-hippie comments to a minimum, please)

Mythbusters Redux
Our episode of Mythbusters aired tonight, aside from a MeFi sign noticed last month, did anyone spot any other promised shout-outs? [For those without TV, you can see a small segment on silver bullets here, under Mythbusters Uncut. Also, check out the Ask a Ninja clip, just because.]
PDF warnings
PDF warnings are always appreciated by me. Lack of a PDF warning is annoying. PDF seems so outdated and unnecessary.
Don't Get the Delete High
Getting the dog high? Why wasn't the whole thing deleted? Letting any comments ride on that one is a slippery slope, I should think. Especially ones condoning it or speaking of giving a dog something toxic.
Mefi reference on Wired (sort of)
Lore Sjöberg has a column/blog/whatever on Wired's website. In the most recent edition/post, he expresses a desire to "replace [the caps lock key] with a more useful key, like Reload MetaFilter Obsessively."
Full thing here.
What a small world...
Another really awesome solving of a problem. Metafilter rules.
MTU values still causing problems?
MeFi (and sub-domains) are still blocked to people with the wrong MTU settings using OS X (previously). Right now I can't access any of the sites following a complete reset of my router last night. Safari halts on *.metafilter.com when the status bar says, "... Completed 3 of 4 items". This happens on both my computers connected to the router. I'm currently accessing via www.siteglove.com, an anonymous proxy. To be honest, I'm not sure if the MTU value is causing the problem, but there's clearly something wrong. Admins: Please look at the comment on the previous threads about firewalls blocking network discovery traffic (from user eriko). That's your cure. Windows computers work around this automatically. Other computers don't, unless the user tweaks!

Wow, I can be sexual too
Threads like this make me wonder why we can't answer anonymous questions anonymously? (aside from the obvious potential for trolling)
Why Oh Why
Why is THIS anonymous?

We few, we happy few, we band of @-signs -- Nethack tourney; MeFi represent!
There's a Nethack tournament going on for all of next month. I know we have a bunch of Nethack fans. Want to be part of a MeFi clan?
MetaFilter should really stop following us around and imitating us.
Onlyconnect and I hosted a gathering yesterday evening starting around 6 pm eastern. Attendees included at least five Mefites. Topics dicussed at that party that have subsequently appeared on the front page through no action of our own include:
- An extended discussion of "Freaks and Geeks"
- The further creative output of Judd Apatow
- Lesbian Until Graduation (LUG)
Retrotag Project - details and requests
So we've been working on backtagging old posts for about five days now. We've gotten about 10% of them done. I just wanted to drop a note here for anyone who missed the sidebar note, the podcast note or the other MeTa thread. If you'd like to help with tagging old untagged posts, drop me an email or IM with your usernumber and email address and I'll get you set up. If you're already helping, thank you very much, we're making great strides.

Providence/Southeastern New England meetup
How does a Providence/Southeastern New England meetup on Sunday, June 10th sound?
bizarre skin condition part 2
Did someone already post the follow up to the post about the guy with the disfiguring growths on his hands? If so, I missed it.
"Oh god, no, I can't believe I clicked!"
Can one of you kind admins please go in and put a spoiler alert in the link to this thread?

Why go straight to the comment box after commenting?
When I post a comment in a thread, the page reloads at the comment box, necessitating a scroll upward to view my comment and any comments that might have been posted while I was posting. Might it be better for the page to load at the last comment on the previous page (i.e. the last comment on the copy of the page used to post) or the comment directly after?
SexualHarrassment Filter.
Since when did MetaFilter become Sexual Harrassment Filter? How is a link to videos showing a teacher being groped by her students appropriate for an FPP? HOPE ME.

Are numeric HTML entities allowed or not?
I found this previous MeTa post, which states why numeric html entities are not allowed. However, there seem to be no named entities for the musical notes. How did this happen then?
9: ColdChef goes six feet under
An amazing interview with ColdChef about what life is like running a funeral home and what the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina taught him about MetaFilter. Also, a recap of the last two weeks, recorded on May 25, 2007. It runs long at 1 hour, 9 minutes total (about 35minutes with ColdChef, but totally worth it).
Voting for Podcast Music?
Would the admins (yes you kind folks) consider voting/nominations/suggestions for the featured songs for future podcasts? Just curious. (Prepared for a sound walloping.)
membership at stake
Can I get rid of that guy with the floating T-bone on the front page?
Timestamps on Activity pages not zone-adjusted
I love the new Activities page(s) in the user profiles, but the timestamps on comments and posts there aren't being adjusted for time zones. For instance, I see this comment of mine as having been at 10:16am (which is correct) on the AskMe page, but at 7:16am on my activity page.
Sidebar nomination
Wowee what a fascinating comment. Sidebarable?
DC Meet-up: where were you, terrapin?
DC Meta Meet-up
Sorry for the delay, here are the pictures (and the great pickles) from last Saturday's Washington DC picnic meet-up. I am never again lending out my camera when I still have photos to upload.
More white space!
There's something odd about the MetaFilter home page. A huge blank space next to the sidebar, between the date and the first post.

Always. ALWAYS Filter.
Matt, I have waited several hours for you to fix it, but the song parody you linked to in the Blue Sidebar is titled "Thou Shalt Always Filter", not "Thou Shalt Not Filter". And it is totally awesome...

Chicago Metafilter Meetup?
I'll be in Chicago at the end of July (27-29) for the BlogHer conferences. Anyone interested in trying to arrange a meetup there? I'll be in the Navy Pier area. Suggestions for possible meetup locations near there?
Highlighting the original questioner's comments in Ask Metafilter - good idea or bad?
Often in Ask Metafilter the original questioner chimes in with clarifications or extra information, but answerers don't necessarily read all previous comments before chipping in. Do people think it might be a good idea to highlight the original poster's comments in thread? (Obviously this only makes sense for Ask).
JAB JAB JAB

Adding original post title to 'Favorited'
I don't know if the 'Activity' link on the profile page is still a work in progress. But, if so, how about adding a little bit of context to the Favorited tab?
It's not very useful with just a couple of lines from the post and a date.
Quality Vs. Quantity, n00b edition
So I found two cool sites, dealing with entirely separate things that could make meaty FPPs. I just don't have the time to do the research to flesh them out right now. Should I make a pair of posts, or one post connected in a jokey or left-field way? Should I just make follow-up posts in my own thread as I find more stuff, or would you prefer the style of my previous posts, in general, even if it means I forget about stuff that may potentially be cool? I see a massive variety of styles, but I figure I may as well sound the hivemind out. Please feel free to ignore me if I'm being too n00bish.
Questionnaire online
The target from here looks to be working again.
Please improve the coherence, for the kids
There's a little clickable tab thingy labelled 'My Comments', as well as a 'My Comments' clickable link in the list-of-things-to-do near the top on the front page. Clicking each identically named thing leads to markedly different pages, one of which is useful (the one which puts your comment in context), and one of which is not (the one which just lists the posts you commented on). This is deeply ontologically upsetting.
Also, when you post a thread on Metatalk, the text entry box is labelled 'Description:', rather than, e.g., 'Text:', or 'Post:'. I feel this additional category violation affront is essentially a slap in the face.
Tell me jokes!
What's your favorite simile about dumb people? Is this seriously not ChatFilter? It's a subjective question with a link in the post to a Google search with a ton of answers to choose from.
Now with six more pieces of flair
Minor feature add: you can set your flickr username in your account, and it will automatically grab your last six photos uploaded and add them to your userpage.
Moderation in moderating
What standards of consistency to moderators apply in redacting comments? Can anything give rise to standards?
I ask not so much to seek the retention of my own comments; the world wouldn't be worse off if all of them were deleted. But I am flabbergasted at the inconsistency in treatment -- e.g., the comments on this thread -- and amazed that there's no attempt to explain or even to identify the party responsible.

Fearless Leader Watch Filter: Mathowie presentation on online communities
Thought some folks might like to see a presentation Matthew posted up on the most excellent slideshare site about building online communities. Fantastic selection of photos in the presentation...nicely done.
(No, I'm not a crazy stalker person - I was checking slideshare out for some dull compsci reading, and Mathowie's head popped up this was a featured presentation. Enjoy!

As nice as it is to know what people are NOT, what is the precedent for people in AskMe to so doggedly remind people that they are not a doctor, not a lawyer, and most importantly, not YOUR doctor or lawyer?
MetaFatty?
Do MeFites really look askance at fat people?
AskMe is not talk therapy.

Metafilter Cafepress?
Is there still a Metafilter Cafepress store? I'd like to buy another "Coffee is for Closers" mug, but the store seems to have disappeared. If it's truly gone, is there a (non-Cafepress?) alternative where I could get the same mug? (The non-MF mugs I've seen aren't as nice).
Remembering Retrotagging
What ever became of the idea to retrotag older posts? There seemed to be a consensus in this thread, but it aged out before any decision was made.

What was that post about household rules?
Does anyone remember an AskMe post from a year or so ago where a list of household (maybe food specific) rules were generated and the OP was advised to print out the post and put it up for housemates to read?
ColdFusion error on MeFi's index page, cookie-related
The other day, MeFi and its subdomains started giving me the following ColdFusion error when loading the index page. (Firefox / Intel Mac, as below.)
MeFi works fine for me in Safari, and I'm guessing that resetting my cookies will solve the problem. (Something's corrupted in there, maybe.) But I thought I'd pass along the error screen in case it's of interest to the powers that be...
Error is as follows:

The Metafiltr project page has HTML in the title.

MeFi Reader Survey
So, I was all set to take the survey which is mentioned at AskMe (right-hand side, under the list tags/post block)
"MetaFilter Readers. Support this site and its advertisers by participating in a brief survey: questionmarket.com."Unfortunately, this is the result when clicking on the link: "The website you're looking for cannot be found. The website may no longer exist, or may have moved."

Feel-Good Follow-Up Filter
A few weeks ago, I posted a question about our mountains of returnable bottles. Just thought I'd mention the outcome...two days after my post, we found a flyer attached to our doorknob. The local high school was collecting returnables as part of a fund-raiser for a student whose house had burned down. We hauled our many (many!) bags of bottles out to the curb as directed. We weren't there when they were collected, but a few days later our next-door neighbor caught me outside and mentioned that he'd been present when the kids came around to collect the bottles, and one of them yelled "Hey, jackpot!" to the others when they hit our curb.
No particular point of this post, I guess, other than it was somewhat serendipitous timing that I had all our bottles bagged and had just posed the question as to what the heck to do with them.

I got home from work yesterday to find my totally awesome MetaFilter t-shirt waiting for me in my pile of mail!
Anyone else sporting one of these totally cool and very blue t-shirts?
video embedding (flash)
The new flash media player from Jeroen Wijering can show mp3s, SWF and FLV video, photos and RSS/XSPF/ATOM playlists. Should MetaFilter allow FPPs to use this? Are inline video comments/playlists a feature to avoid?
May 18
Thanks, I enjoyed it. Now who are you?
So, um, who sent out the mysterious "PLEASE ENJOY" MefiSwap CDs?
From the AskMe thread:
Is Metafilter too labyrinthine, for a new comer at least?
I’ve been here for a couple of months now, and I’ve gotten to know a few people, but I still don’t feel as if I’ve become a part of the community yet? Not sure if that’s my fault, may be I should post more often, or comment more in other peoples’ threads, or post better FPPs, but the question’s been on my mind for some time now.
It just feels like a tough nut to crack. I am still trying though.
Unclosed tags a problem in "My Comments"
When I view my "My Comments" page, everything after this comment is small. There seems to be no closing tag. The original post page is fine. Is there some auto-closing mechanism that needs to be implemented in the new My Comments page?
calloutfilter.
I don't think this takedown was appropriate. Just because the story was "resolved" with flickr doesn't mean that there's nothing to talk about, or that it isn't interesting.
I Like To See Who Likes To Watch
It'd be kind of awesome if we could see, in some generic way like "hits", how many looks our MeJobs job postings have gotten.
Best no more.
Now that we have this new interface for viewing our comments, I can no longer easily scroll through my ask.metafilter answers and see if any new ones have been marked as best. The word "best" appears, in small gray text, but the cool check mark that made me feel special is gone. :(
Footerless
There isn't a footer on the My Posts page if you don't have any posts within the selected timeframe.

Make flags work like favorites please.
Without complaining about a specific thread, Matt, can we get "flagging" to be inline/ajaxy, as a drop down, rather than the press, choose, new page, back to thread? The way that the favorites work?

All the news that...
Huh. So the blog of a certain Mr. Language Hat is linked in the sidebar at the Village Voice books section (under "Bookmarks") now? Is this old news? Did I miss something? Cheers for Mr. Hat, in any case.
Attention: Los Angles(L.A.) - Gathering
Attention: Los Angles(L.A.) I'm flying in and staying around the airport and working near the Staples center for a few days. I'd like to organize a meet up and meet some American mefites.
If some one would be so kind as to pick a place and time I would love to show up and tell you stories about Canada or something.
Calgary meetup this weekend?
Calgary meet-up this weekend? I know it's very short notice, but unexpectedly I'll be stuck in Calgary by myself this weekend. Is anybody interested in a meet-up on Saturday 19th? I'm staying somewhere pretty central, but I don't have a car.
Starry Eyed Surprise
About those stars some people get... pointless tiny little request, but could those be given a transparent canvas so they show up nicey nice across themes? Currently when viewing with the white background they show up as a star-in-a-block. Or you could even render them as Unicode entities so they could be given the ol' CSS one-two punch and you wouldn't have to get clever with graphics.
The new Favorites page kicks ass!
Hot damn, Matt! I love the new "Favorited by others" page! Beautiful work, sir.
Go Stinky go!!!
Followup--remember that story about the Hispanic high-school kids who entered and won the robotics contest at MIT? I just met with their advisor.

NYC meetup?
I'll be in New York between 5 and 12 June, so let's have a meetup. Best days for me are 5, 6 and 7th. I'm staying at the Gershwin Hotel on E.27th Street. One of those dates will be a theatre night, but I don't know yet which one.

SEO heaven
Is a domain an acceptable user name? Seems like it would be a perfectly good name without the .com on the end.
New user history pages are up
There's a new user history interface, at http://www.metafilter.com/activity/(your user ID). It's linked on user pages now and provides a consistent view of your posts, comments, and things favorited by others (including a new most popular favorited list from your history). Three cheers for pb for building it, it should be much easier to use and more consistent than the previous way we did things.

Better way of tracking threads that aren't favorites
Pony request: Can we have temporary favorites?
There are often threads I want to follow, but not make favorites, but if I make them a favorite, then I have delete from my favorites later on. This gets to be a chore when there's a lot of interesting stuff.
Yes, there's the My comments page, but I find it useless, as it only tracks the last ten comments made to the thread, as opposed to only new comments since I last read the thread and it tracks threads I've commented on.
With temporary favorites, I could say "watch this thread for x amount of time". Then if there was a page of just these temp favorites, it make it easy to keep tabs on threads that interest me.
Or basically, just a better way of keeping tabs on threads the user finds interesting without having to make them favorites, which seem like a more permanent marker.
Because only "Dude, that's f*cked up" will do.

Buggy thing.

Honest question or veiled propaganda?
Something about this post sounds not like a genuine question, but like anti-drug propaganda. It's been posted anonymously, so it's been past the finely honed bullshit-meters of our hosts here, but it still strikes me that something isn't kosher. Or maybe all the pot's making me paranoid.

Does Falwell belong on the blue?
Should the breaking news of Jerry Falwell's death be posted to the blue?
He was clearly a polarizing figure, and as such putting him up there may be, prima facie, a inflammatory post. It's NewsFilter at the least.

Metafilter Runs v.3.1.
Web-goddess regained the Mefi distance running title (previous challenges : 1, 2). Amazingly, she racked up 77.21 kilometer in 14 days. Silver and bronze medals go to AJR (76k) and Sanjayafan (75k).
During the remainder of this month, we'll find out who's the fastest mefite (speed challenge over 5k). Previous participants have been invited to this new challenge via the Nike+ site. If you've got the Nike + Ipod sport kit and want in, post your Nike+ screenname in this thread.

endless whining spoilers
Apparently it's time for our semi-annual argument over what constitutes a spoiler and when - if ever - they are acceptable.

Hama7's Yamiga Fetish.
Hama7 recently posted this FPP on the blue and it got rightly deleted. Now it's back... and probably worse than before.
MeFi and antisemitism
So MeFi user Brian B. has chosen to use the recent Scientology thread to spread a bit of good old-fashioned antisemitism, selective quotes from the Talmud styley, explaining why, apparently, Jews believe is it ok to murder non-Jews, something my own rabbi omitted to mention at any point, starting here and continuing through the thread. As I am relatively new to posting here, I would like to ask what is the MeFi etiquette for dealing with a fellow MeFite who wants to use the site to spread racist propaganda of this sort. Because right now I am breathing very slowly and deeply and still seeing everything through an extremely red mist and I would appreciate some suggestions.

Has this happened in other threads?
What, exactly, is this? It's a comment posted right before the closing that really doesn't have anything to do with the thread. (I was just looking back at my own post today and found it.) The user seems to wanted to have posted something about the thread but didn't have enough time (maybe?) but instead just posted 5 random links, two of them to Mansferd Mann's Band, two now dead YouTube links, and some crazy Scobby Doo thing. Not that I have a problem with any of it, but it just seems... weird.

Seoul meetup?
Hey hey hey there, Seoul brothers an' sisters! I'm swinging through your fair, river-cleaved burg for the two weeks beginning 22 May - my wonderful wife has a show (and a talk) at Insa Art Space, and I'm coming to help her mount it, see some old friends, and generally be her number-one fan. This is time enough, me thinks, to arrange quite the soju-fueled shindig. What say? (Stavros, I'm looking at you.)

What's with all the drama loving going on?
Annon posts a question asking if a guy likes her. The thread is 4 days old and still open. Annon posts a new question asking the same thing. Why was that allowed?
An end to [more inside] "witticism".
Could the "Post" button on new AskMe questions trigger a script to check that the first part of the question ends either in a "." or a "?"? This would bring an end to the [more inside] "witticisms" (e.g. Assuredly there's [more inside]). I realise it is minor, and that I have also once been guilty of propagating this lame disruptive meme.
The return of Matt "Dirty" Sanchez
I am not sure where landed on the whole posting follow-up to the grey debate, so hopefully this is okay. Since the Matt Sanchez thread got some people's attention, I thought I'd follow up here and let folks know that the gay porn star turned marine has (allegedly) turned back to the gay sexcapades that made him infamous. That last link has text that is NSFW and a photo that is questionable (topless stud).
Song Challenge
I have an idea for a songwriting competition, and I think the musicians here are talented enough (and have the know-how / equipment) to pull it off. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, someone (the winner of the last round) could post a challenge (ex: an old-school country waltz about flowers), then everyone who wants to compete could post their songs and the MeFites could vote. Opinions?
OMG! It works! I gotta buy a sweater!

Simple ideas to help stop double posts.
Ok, So I committed a MeFi sin the other day and made a double post. I felt a bit embarrassed but it got me thinking about a couple ways to prevent some of the double posting that goes on around here. If any of these ideas are taken up maybe something good will come out of a double post for once.

Just wondering if there are RSS feeds for posts? I've just recently discovered netvibes and it would be great if I could use RSS to keep track of posts.
Of course, even better would be if I can get an RSS feed of my posts with an indication of how many comments are there. That way, I could quickly see if any new comments had been made, without having to add all these new RSS feeds everytime I make a post!
Is this all pie in the sky, or is it do-able?

Refresh my ZombieFilter
Looking for a specific comment (or entire thread?) either green or blue. It discussed the current popularity of zombie movies as a response to a contemporary fear of anonymity. May have involved references to the MySpace generation. Within the last 6 months, I think. Li'l help?
Bad idea, but if you're gonna do it anyway...
File this under cool questions with a couple really cool answers from just the right people. Despite the obligatory "this is a bad idea" warnings.
Looptopia Meetup
Chicago Looptopia Meetup?
And you're cute too.
So far, this has been one of my favorite days on metafilter, ever. I haven't been around that long, but between the bacon bookmarks (which I would like to officially nominate for the sidebar), the mysterious rocks surrounding Washington DC, and the all-sugar replicator, I am really fucking impressed. I know some of you hate America (Maybe you should check this out), but I loved that post too. Thanks rad people!
PonyFilter: Remove titles from URL via preference setting?
PonyFilter: Can we add a preference to remove the post titles from URLs? I occasionally read Metafilter from work. I clicked the Baby playing with a snake post and had a moment of terror as I viewed the URL.
AskMe: Hope me break the law!
Ask Metafilter: Help me become a professional shoplifter -- don't we have a guideline against helping people learn how to break the law via AskMe somewhere? Considering that repeat shoplifting is a felony, I think this would fall under that guideline.
T-shirts for sale!
I'm selling my first ever real silkscreen printed t-shirts, through Coudal Partners' Swapmeat. It's limited to 119 shirts in M, L, and XL, $19 each (paypal). Ever have trouble finding someone at a meetup? This should help. Also, if this goes well, I'll be doing more designs in the future.
Ashley Treatman followup
Following up on this post from January, the Washington hospital which performed the "Ashley Treatment" has acknowledged that it broke the law.
Length limits in AskMe
"More Inside" is great and all, but perhaps it's time for absolute length limits in AskMe? Brain-dump essays like those (2600 and 1500 words!) don't help people answer, and all those posts need is some judicious editing before posting.

Metalyrics?
I looked in projects and music, no place to simply put words, no music. so... delete away if inappropriately located.

Apropos of nothing: a preview of this week's upcoming podcast.
Salem, MA meetup?
Hey Boston/North Shore: Stynxno and I are coming to town. We'd like to meetup with you on Sunday, May 27th, in beautiful Salem, MA.
Horrific, but should go elsewhere.
Much as I think that this news story merits discussion, I can't help but feel like askme isn't the place for it. There isn't really an answer anyone can give.
Jessamyn Installs Ubuntu
Jessamyn installs Ubuntu on donated library computers. Film at 11 (or at least the post from BoingBoing)
P.S. Folk hero?
At least nobody has posted about gun control yet
Q: How do I get what I need from my husband to deal with some personal trauma?
A: I'd be angry with you for what you did because it was stupid.
Follow up on Duclod posts.
The mystery of the duclod man is solved. Related to this post from March and this post from 2001.
I think Sarah Aswell did a better job of unraveling his truth than the googling masses of metafilter.
Did Anyone else notice the MiFi shoutout on Mythbusters?
There was a Mythbusters marathon recently. At the end of one of the the shows, behind Adam and Jamie, on the back wall, there was a masking tape "MeFi."
NYC Meetup, Saturday, 12 May 2007
NYC Meetup on Saturday? I'll be in town for one night only, and would love to be able to meet the famous NYC MeFites before I head back across the pond.

July 14, 2009
It's probably about time to start planning the 10th anniversary for metafilter. It goes without saying that there should be a meet-up involved somehow. But where should it be?
MeFiWhack!
Since apparently MeFi users want a way to rank each other, here's an easy way to do it. You take one of your posts, and a tag from that post. Then, you find out how many google hits the tag generates vs. the number of times it is used as a tag in MetaFilter. The winner is the person who has the highest google-hit to MeFi tag ratio.
Canucks and their sinister novelty coins vex hardworking, cosmopolitan Americans
Followup on Canadian spy coins. Today, an Associate Press FOIA request reveals that they were just the commemorative quarters we thought.
Religious / Political Threads Largely Repetitive
MetaFilter discussions about religion and politics tend to have comments which are basically the same as other MetaFilter discussions about religion and politics.
Rank Users Based on Favorites
Why not make a page that ranks users based on how many "favorites" their comments, FPPs, and questions garner? I'm not sure hard how this would be to create, but it might be a nice incentive to post quality items. Also, it would highlight some of the dedicated, and/or imaginative members of Mefi. Just a thought.
MeFi Tokyo meetup
This is a post for discussion on a yet-to-be-scheduled MeFi Tokyo meetup.

Northeast New England Meetup Wrap-up Thread
Northeast New England Meetup was a great success. There were lots of cameras and a delicious cake our wonderful hostess provided.
don't hate me because i want to look beautiful
Many a drunken NYC mefite has gazed into his/her half-empty glass and wished aloud that DaShiv would come to NYC and take photos of us.
Well, I say life is short, and we're not getting younger. Let's take up a collection and get him out here for a meetup.
I'll start with a pledge of $50 towards his airfare and any other necessary expenses.
Lets play Mafia
Lets play Mafia. It is normally a party game but I've seen it played on the internet a couple times. I've played it in real life, but there was always something so appealing about playing an online round. I've wanted to arrange a game but never had the right internet forum for the job. I think MeFi would be a perfect group of people for the task. Anyone else interested? If the admins are cool with it, I think it'd be a blast.

MTU settings = No Metafilter
Admins: Metafilter is blocked for people with incorrect MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings on their router/computer(s). See this thread. I had this problem for several weeks, during which Metafilter's banner would load, but nothing else. Something needs to be tweaked on either the Metafilter server, or the Metafilter routing system (firewall settings?). My router was set to the default values for my ISP when this happened (BT Broadband in the UK). In other words, this isn't caused by people tweaking their settings—some ISPs are effectively incompatible with Metafilter in its current setup.
The Corporal's nemesis appears
If you've given up on that long Corporal Sanchez thread, it suddenly gets interesting at this point, when the author of the website that's the subject of the post joins MetaFilter and the discussion.
How about a MefiFiction?
Would adding a feature to upload original stories similar to Mefi Music be of interest to anyone?

Free Drunk Hoff!
It's Friday. The people want -- nay, demand -- their Drunken Hoff, dammit.

MetaParent Bay Area Meetup?
Inspired by this AskMe thread, would any MeFi parents in the Bay Area be interested in a family-friendly Meetup?
DC meet-up
DC Meetup? Thinking last week of May, perhaps the Thursday night (May 24) before Memorial Day weekend? Also, how do people feel about meeting in the Capitol Hill area?
tag clouds for insight and knowledge.
Inspired by this thread, and in an effort to help us know each other better, would it be possible to have tag clouds of everything we've ever written on metafilter - not just the tags from our posts - displayed in our profile?

Chicago Meetup: Wanna give it another shot?

The kindness of MeFi.
Never mind "best of the web," this thread is surely the best of MetaFilter.
Detailed description of farm history; MeFi relatives get in on the act.
Callout for awesomeness: Want to know about farming history? Well, ontic's dad will tell you about farming history.
Worship at the feet of MetaSolar!!
This Thread. Got me thinkin as to how the Meta World is powered; Are there things we could do to make the Blue a little bluer? The Green a little greener? The Gray a little… sunnier? I for one would happily slap down another $5, or more, to make this happen.
Hey L.A.! What's shakin??
Hey everyone, a friend and I will be down in L.A. for a convention, May 23 to May 29th.
Anyone want to get together with me for a night of fun?
Beer Fest Meetup
Who’s up for some drinkin’? The East Atlanta Beer Fest is on Saturday, 12 May, from 1 - 6 PM.

YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED
Remember that deadline Patrick Leahy set at Alberto's hearing? Well, Gonzo apparently missed it. Leahy responds with a letter, subpoena included. (direct link to pdf) A follow-up to this post.
There were no blood relations in Lolita!
Since people are always posting about their GuFfs, BuFfs, and SO's, some of which are also MeFi users, I was wondering if there were parent-son/daughter or sibling users as well (that don't care if we know). Might make for some fun reading.
Welcome to Asheville, Hun.
Asheville / East Coast / South East meetup? I'm visiting the area for a while. Who wants a piece of me?

Ninjas, Mythbusters, Mefi - Too awesome to handle
This video, "Metafilter vs. Ask a Ninja Video" has a very obvious MeFi callout.
Favorites Feed
MeFi has got all kinds of RSS feeds, but there isn't an official feed of the popular favorites page, which would be a great way to filter out the site to the most popular posts.
