Sharing Nintendo DS Friend Codes
Hey Matt! You own a Nintendo DS, just like I do. Infact, Metafilter has several DS owners, as this question of mine revealed. The thing is, we're not playing each other online as we damn well should be. So how about adding a field or two on our preferences pages to allow us to prominently advertise our Friend Codes? It's been talked about before. Let's make it happen.
Sergeant Sandwich shout-out
Sergeant Sandwich has not only given us a fine, instructive diagram, but also a new and amusing word to describe said diagram. Kudos!
Disney World Therapy
Thread on Disney World deaths reveals a member's experience with Disney theme parks as creative autism therapy for his son. Pretty cool. More here.
TeenAsk
someone suggested in a AskMe thread that we start a Teen AskMe section. I'm all for it since we are a level headed bunch (excluding some times at MeTa.) I am sure the grammar and butchering of the English Language would bug some of you. I think it would be better then all the banner ad sites that are trying to sell teens garbage. What are your opinions?
Announcing MeFi Music!
Now in alpha beta gamma whatever: MeFi Music. Built in 12 hours with help from pb, it's still got some rough edges and features to come, but for now you can upload a song you've written and recorded (this isn't for file sharing), stream it from the front page or from its own page (where you can also leave comments). You can add things to playlists and stream those too. And the RSS feed is a podcast you can drag into iTunes to suck down every mp3 that gets posted. I'm sure there are bugs and the color scheme was slapped together in five minutes, but expect to see things ironed out in the next couple weeks and I'll add it to the global nav for all sites when it feels complete. If you have any comments or questions, drop them here.

Is there a problem with the AskMe RSS Feed?
Is it just me, or is the AskMe RSS Feed reported to be broken on BlogLines more often than not?
"The feed URL returns a page that does not look like an RSS feed. This can be caused by the feed URL being incorrect, or it can be caused by a configuration issue with the server hosting the feed. If this error continues, you should check the feed URL and, if it is wrong, subscribe to the correct URL."

Pasting formatted code into AskMe response?
Is there a way to paste formatted (e.g. indented) code into an AskMe response? If not, could such a feature be added? It would really help out threads like this.

Attention Washington D.C. MeFites: "I'll be in Lafayette Park during daytime hours from July 4-6 . . . D.C. people I hereby invite you to come say 'hi' to me!"
How long before I can post again?
I posted a question in AskMe yesterday. How long before I can post again - i.e., does it take 7 calendar days or reset on a given day, for example? My wife & I are traveling to Asheville next Tuesday for 3 days and I'd love to ask for suggestions on places to go/things to do (other than Biltmore).

Do we have a list of sock puppets?
I keep seeing sock puppets mentioned (for example, here) in various MeTa conversations, and I was wondering, since I don't want to go tunneling through all those mounds of... conversation; is there a canonical list of known sock-puppetry? For example, on the Wiki, or in a wing of MetaChat? I'm not talking about outing those who are still behaving or anything, but rather addressing the question in an "after the fact" sort of way.

Rejecting Anonymous Questions
Are anonymous posters to AskMe notified if their question is rejected? (I did a search but didn't see the answer to this question.)
Innocuous Comments Being Deleted in askme
AskMe deletions, again. I know it's annoying to hear us all complain about deletions constantly, but it seems like a lot of innocuous comments are getting axed. I understand not insulting the poster, or making just "wisecracks" (which in my mind are by definition at the expense of the poster) but does every bit of human interaction that doesn't quite solve the question -- but does engage with the poster in a respectful way -- need to go?
Visibility of ads
I may be missing something obvious (checked previous metatalk queries) but this post has an advert in it shown in Firefox but not in IE. The advert is for www.ecological.co.uk. Is there a reason for it? I don't remember an adverts on/off feature.

Can You Search Profiles?
Is there a way to search profiles? I want to see if there are any members in a certain city (not near where I live, so the ones listed in my profile don't help).
Thanks for adding resolved tags to your AskMe posts
Related somewhat to the post below, I'd like to thank everyone who has started adopting the custom of adding "resolved" or "updated" tags to their questions. Browsing those tags can be very interesting.

Unsolved questions
How about after 7 days or so, a question (without a best answer) gets a mark of "No best Solution" or "Unsolved?" (along with perhaps an email to the poster?)

Germany/Berlin meetup?
Roll call for Germany-based MeFites! I tried to propose a meetup in Berlin over New Year's, but there was little response. Are there enough MeFi users in Germany for a meetup anywhere?
My post to Projects generated lots of hits and PR. Thanks!
a week ago i made a post to projects of a bug-riddled site i was completely sick of working on. because of you guys, since then it's gotten like 20 bazillion visitors, been on 10 gazillion blogs (good ones, sometimes!) and even got a mention on some tv station in tennessee. the best part is that it isn't even complete enough to really be of any use to anyone! so i'd just like to thank you guys for sticking it on del.icio.us, stumbleupon, your blogs and wherever else and just plain making the internet hype machine work. metafilter rules!

Can you let us retract questions?
Can you put in the ability to retract a question? When you ask something and someone immediately tells you the (incredibly obvious) answer, and you feel like a total dolt for asking it in the first place, can you ask for it to be retracted and have it deleted?

Anonymous Ask Metafilter Archive
"Why does eating in a restaurant make me crap my pants?" and 994 other anonymous gems from the Anonymous Ask Metafilter archive. As AskMe readies for it's 1000th anonymous question, the community is hereby polled: How has the feature worked out for the community? Do you ever wonder how some threads were resolved? And at the risk of seeming too voyeuristic, has anyone ever thought about writing fiction based on the scenario in an anonymous AskMe question?
Awesome belated answer on obscure criminal case
About 14 months ago, I posted a random Ask Metafilter about an obscure criminal case and described it in weak detail. Today I was going through some of my old questions (as you do), and noticed that the question was answered beautifully about three months ago by someone who may have ponied up the membership fee just to answer it. Which is really neat. So I just want to point out how cool it is that someone should do that.
Messy deletion?
This post was deleted for the following reason: what a mess
So that's the barometer now for thread deletion? It doesn't have a clear purpose, goal, or problem to be solved, is too chatty OR there's enough douchebags misbehaving in it?
This precedent sucks.

Project Voting
Is there a quick and simple way to view all the projects I've ever voted for? I vaguely recall someone asking about votes in people's profiles ("...and voted for # projects") but I can't find it (or the answer)
Now that we have our favorites so nicely organized, I wanted to go back and find the projects I had previously voted for, because some of those were probably things I would also want to favorite.

Help me find this AskMe post
Help me find this AskMe post (what I remember): an American was thinking about traveling abroad, and was curious if, as an American, they would be unsafe/uncomfortable (in regard to foreigners' negative opinions of Americans, etc). Making flags public
Feature idea: I'm not sure if it's meant to be private-ish or not.. if it is, you can scratch this idea. I was thinking it would be cool to be able to see "this post / comment has been flagged as:" with a list. The usernames of the flaggers could be anonymous, but it'd be nice to see what the hive mind flags things with.
Favorites now displayed on profile page.
Your user page now tells you how many of your contributions were saved as favorites by others, and there's a page showing you the favorites. Yes, I'm aware that the stuff saved as a favorite by multiple people gets repeated. I'll fix that this week. For the moment, it at least gives you an insight into what others liked that you wrote. Here's my user page showing 148 things I wrote were saved as favorites, and here they are.

Massively Multiplaying MeFites?
MeFites in MMOs? Based on some of the comments in this thread (and others, others and still others), it is an easy guess that Metafilter has substantial representation in many a server-based world. Here are two charts about metafilter. Posts and user numbers and comments and user numbers. Each dot represents a post (or comment), with the post number and number of the user who posted (or commented) as the xy data. I don't remember what prompted me to make these (some metatalk thread, I'm sure), but I found them again on my hard drive and thought someone else might find them interesting (I brought them back up to date, too). There are half a dozen interesting little milestones that show up in the graphs, more than I could see probably.

Sidebarred comment about Intentional Instability Model is a conspiracy theory
I see that jefgodesky's summary of Jeff Vail's "Intentional Instability Model" has been linked to the sidebar. I suppose this is somewhat subjective, but I'd describe it as a conspiracy theory backed by no evidence whatsoever, not really the best of MetaFilter.
The historical description of British policy also seems completely bogus to me. The British regarded the Middle East as their lifeline to India. It makes no sense for them to have deliberately set up Iraq to fail.

Why do people kick the other kid's toys in the Sandbox (Ask Metafilter)?
I would like to commend the regulars of AskMetaFilter for letting their style of asking questions happen. It inspired the way I write AskMe questions now (and now I don't care if any people answer). Which brings me to my next and final point; about ettiquete and policy. Why can't people relax and just realize that's it's a sandbox, and if you kick the other kid's toy or throw sand in their face, I'm going to shove you? The conflict is necessary to watch the community form, but I think it's time to move to the monkey bars, you know what I mean kids?

Is it considered in bad taste or a breach of policy to offer a prize or reward to whomever successfully solves a tech problem I'm tempted to post in askme? I've tried various customer support avenues and have had no luck so far.

My link to a site with a few hundred photographs gets deleted because it's supposedly a double of a 2-year old link to a post on some messageboard with but a few dozen similar pictures? What gives? Queue screen shots
At this year's atmedia in London, Jeffrey Veen did an excellent presentation on Designing The Next Generation Of Web Apps. As part of his presentation he recalled an incident where he walked out of his office to be confronted with a sky full of smoke. To try and find out what was happening, he went back into his office and fired up a browser. Queue screen shots of the sites he checked, the third on the list being the blue (PDF).
Could we have a timed window for editing comments?
How difficult would it be to program an edit function into our comments that allows us to revise our contributions within 1-5 minutes of posting it? I think it'd be a very cool thing to have for us OCD types that apologize after we spell something wrong and immediately correct ourselves in the next comment. Also, it could serve as a conscience (you post something, you regret it immediately, and get rid of it). Note, I'm not asking for unlimited editing. Only the ability to edit within 1-5 minutes of your original post.

Just out of curiosity, how is it that some posts get deleted because the thread is full of the same animated gifs we always see, and some posts continue to live way past their prime? Is it the presence of ceiling cat?
I understand some of these are left in for humor value; such was the case with the infamous Mushroom post. But when the only thing that's different is the original post, and there are no actual responses anyhow, what's the criteria?

Request that mods sign off on who deleted posts
When posts are deleted and mentioned in MeTa we see something like: "This post was deleted for the following reason: This is way too open-ended. Try again next week with something specific and more focused."
Sometimes it's obviously Matt doing the deleting and sometimes obviously Jess, but as in this example I can't tell and it drives me nuts! Could you guys initial off on these things or something? (It doesn't matter but drives me nuts filter.)

3 years free, was it worth it?
In 2003, a post about 3 years of free web hosting, and almost 3 years later, the tribulations of cancelling aforementioned free web hosting. Full circle.
AskMe format and useability
Love/Hate: I can't read AskMeFi (CSS help?). Does anyone have an external CSS file or a setting or a magic pixie dust that makes these pages we're on more readable?
I tried posting this question to askmefi, but got prompted with a "prob better on metatalk" denial. There is no Category for help, so I'm putting this under feature requests...
I'm using firefox (which offers more solutions) to read these pages and I find the colors, indentation, lack of structure so hard to follow. I would love something that had alternating row (posts) colors and a way to really tell the difference between a post, a comment, a response, whatever.
Any usability specialists out there with the same beef? I love the content, its just the presentation that drives me batty. (I do use RSS to choose what to read, but once I click in...boomsucka...I feel like I'm in a all green library with green books green carpeting a couple yellow magazines and no cataloging of any sort.
I've got this "developer" extension for firefox installed so I can change/tweak/alter a lot of things including fonts, external css files, whatever. Please send help...I'm sinking.

AskMe broad enough for a chatfilter to fall into it
This AskMe post is poorly worded and excessively broad.
Ask Metafilter's Forty Thousandth Post
Titles on "All Favorites"
On the 'all favorites' page -- can we get the first few lines of the full entries as a title attribute on the link?
AskMe weighme judgeme
Ask a question about being bugged and everyone says "see a psychiatrist". Ask a question about losing weight or dying while trying, with mentions by the OP of bulimia and not caring if it affects her health - and people come up with tapeworms and smoking? What the heck?
Can I Post an MP3?
I have an mp3 I'd like identified. I could crop it down to a few relevant seconds and post it to askme for help. How much, if any, of an ill-gotten mp3 can I host and post before the RIAA puts a hit out on me? The end goal truly is to purchase the music, I just need to know who made it. Also, if this is a just a really bad idea in general, feel free to let me know.

Can anyone find or remember the link to a gallery selling framed mathematical equations?
Can anyone find or remember the link to a gallery selling framed mathematical equations? All the obvious search terms are escaping me, making me think that the post referred to the link's content in an oblique way. The art was very simple, just the equations on a white background with a black frame. It could have been on AskMetafilter or Metafilter, I do not remember which. Thanks!

I'm looking for a site featuring pictures of people dressed up as animals using sleeping bags....
I'm looking for a link that was posted some time ago. It was a French site with pictures of people dressed up as various animals (squirrels, etc) using things like sleeping bags as costume material. I remember the post not having much text, so I can't find it with searches.

AskMe tag bug and pony request
Bug and pony request: example page Bug - this is the list of questions tagged in Ask with publishing. When I get to the bottom of the page it lets me click on "older questions". However, many of the questions on page two are the same ones as those on page one. Feature request - Any way to get the name of the OP to appear on the tags page? Right now it just lists time and date. Thx.
In favorite comments, can we change it so the title takes us to the thread?
On the display for our favorite comments, I have this Pavlovian response in which I keep trying to click on the title of the thread to take me to the main thread, before I realize I need to click on the time and date aread to go there. Matt, is there any chance my Pavlovian instincts could be realized?
Are we not supposed to talk about i/p?
So are we not supposed to talk about Israel/Palestine at all now? this post was deleted, apparently because it was about the Israel/Palestine situation. It's a fairly straight-forward post to an NYT article. Is all news about the situation verboten or what?

Usernames with @
@mathowie: Why are people starting to put commercial at signs before usernames when they are directly addressing other MeFites? Is this a convention from Digg or something? Am I the only one who finds this annoying, even more annoying than putting other usernames in boldface? Even more annoying than Todd Lokkenning? Can we make it stop?

Derailed conversation
Once again Dios derails an interesting conversation, and makes it all about him, by claiming that the post about an emerging media trend which may be redefining the word "terrorism" is worthless and stupid.

New Features for Favorites
New features for favorites: favorited posts and comments from your contacts have been added to your usercontacts page and there's a page for all favorites from your contacts. This should be useful for finding stuff you may have missed, but that people you trust and enjoy reading deemed worth of saving.
People that marked something as a favorite are no longer shown below each post, but on their own page. On your own favorites page you can now see who else marked the same item as a favorite, and the recent popular favorites page now lists comments as well as posts. Whew.

Is MeFi a member of Amazon Rewards?
When posting reference links to Amazon for books & such, does a click-through result in some pittance flowing back to Number 1? In other words, is Metafilter a member of Amazon Rewards? If not, there is no benefit of using an amazon.com link vs. for example a bn.com or powells.com .
Post recall: standarized test scores by state
Looking for a link that was posted somewhere on the blue...
In connection with this Ask post, I am looking for a site that was linked on MetaFilter a few months ago that allowed you to search standardized test scores by high school or by state. standardized test -election -president failed me. As did a del.icio.us search. As did various Google searches. Help would be appreciated and repaid in golden thoughts made of the finest silks which are gold.

Accusations of dual identities
matteo has repeatedly accused dios and me of being the same person, and casually attacks other users for politics they do not hold, including me. In his latest tirade, he calls me a "superhero of bad faith" and suggests that I retire to LGF or FreeRepublic. I'd like to publically ask him to stop. Thanks in advance.

It's no longer my concern
"I'm not going to debate this with you or anyone else. In fact, as of today, I'm officially retiring the all-seeing eye dog from MetaFilter, and from the blogosphere more generally, out of protest. As long as I've been a guest here, I've always tried to tell the truth as I see it, and that's all I could ever really hope to do. Beyond that, it's your choice whether to see what's happening for what it really is or not. It's no longer my concern. Goodbye, and thanks for the many great discussions I've been privileged to have with you all."

Bad AskMe response
This post is abusive, flamebait and does not address the question.
"You just flagged..." offends my design sensibilities
I like the look of Metafilter. It is an attractive site. The only part of it that I hate with a passion is the "You just flagged something, good for you" page. It is an eyesore. I hate its whiteness and the lack of words on 90% of its surface. Let's make it a pretty color and spread the words out some. What do you say?
Looking for an animated GIF.
I'm looking for an animated GIF that was posted inline somewhere here. It shows two dogs humping and one throwing up. It's for a friend. Really. Honest.. If someone could email it to me, I'd appreciate it.

Shorter dgaicun: 'I know nothing about this extremely sensitive topic, therefore I will derail it early on with a heap of ignorant stereotypes.' Flagged with extreme prejudice.
Why does AskMe loading depend on dynamic.fmpub.net?
dynamic.fmpub.net: It's come up before, and I know I can block it in my hosts file, but why does loading/rendering the entirety of Ask.Metafilter depend on contacting this site? When it is slow to respond, the entire site seems to hang, which should be avoided.

Have Favorites made the "Fantastic" flag obsolete?
With the advent of the Favorites feature, has the 'fantastic post' flag been made obsolete? For instance, this question was only given two fantastics, but is a favorite of 32 users. This pattern is exhibited in nearly every question on the fantastic questions page. Are people no longer flagging posts as fantastic? Should these two features be combined, or one be eliminated?

What is the Policy on Chatfilter?
Why does this guy get a new asshole for not being scientific about his very unscientific question, when two complete morons, not to mention a related question, get helpful advice?
Chatfilter, yeah, but Christ -- so is half of AskMe.
Really. Tell me.
Is it simply the ebb and flow of the universe that requires some dumb questions go down in flames while others get answered?
Or is there a secret formula that evokes pity rather than scorn?

MeFi Writers Group?
This fun and useful thread made me think about how many great writers participate here. Some of us are published authors; some are unpublished (but great) wordsmiths. I've learned many things about writing from Metafilter members, and I admire the care with which they construct their clear, evocative prose.
Would anyone be interested in forming some soft of MeFi Writers Group? I have no idea what form it would take, but I though we could toss the idea around and see if it lands anywhere specific.

It seems to be acceptable to post videos with just one link now, but can we get some clarification on what makes a video a good video to post? For example, what makes this video a good FPP?

Did my project submission get lost? Or have admins just not had a chance to approve it? I only ask because it doesn't show up in my projects list at all, and I'm not sure if that's because it's not approved or I screwed up the submission somehow.

I think this post is really inappropriate
I think this post is really inappropriate - the poster has cobbled together some news stories to make a horrible, unsupported inference about a non-public figure who is, in all likelihood, totally innocent. Such speculation, especially with no available facts to support it, may be entertaining but is also extremely insensitive to the survivor and her family. Is this what we want to do now?
